Part time escorts, who are popular among some guys here, are discussed in this article.

Interestingly, one of the part-time escorts interviewed said that he advertises on Rentboy.

Thank you FF...a fascinating article, especially for someone like myself who enjoys this hobby as a client so much! :):):)

It is an interesting subject, and an interesting article. Thank you for posting this FF. I do find that it glosses over the darker side of escorting - the potential abuse by clients, the potential damage to someone's self-esteem, the isolation from friends, family and partners. Just to name a few.

Interesting article. It jibes with my experience. College students wanting extra income have been good friends of mine. :)

Anybody else notice this? "Tinder and Grindr are full of men with dollar signs in their profile". Is this true? I never use these sites so I don't know.

Weird—I read a MUCH shorter version of this article today online (and not on the Fusion site)... shorter to the point where my reaction was that it seemed half-written. I find myself wanting to approach cute guys in restaurants to offer up the advice that escorting is a lot easier and more lucrative than the average waiter gig—but I must agree with Baron that it's not for the faint of heart or for people lacking in patience or empathy. I've also never used sites other than M4RN or the occasional foray into Rentboy to advertise, but I have seen the rare profile on Manhunt (when I was using it) that would have words like "generou$." I contacted one of these men once out of curiosity, and the vibe I got from him was that he really didn't know what he was doing and thought he might attract some hard-up Adonis for $20 or so.

I still think this topic would make for a fascinating TV show on Logo or whatever, as long as they balanced the good with the bad and actually contacted some real escorts as consultants.

It is a MAJOR thing these days. Just here in DC I am still meeting amazing new clients (thanks guys!!!) but....at the same time...the part time Craigslist, grindr, scruff and Adam 4 Adam guys are flooding the market creating an over supply....less demand and lower prices. My clients do NOT want that and the idea of 75 bucks an hour turns them off . They would rather pay an established full time pro such as Chris E., the Legend Dave or myself. But if we deny how these boys are changing the market we have our heads in the sand! @ www.rentboy.com/magicmikey

In the 1990s when Rounds in New York City was still open, it was possible to meet under employed students, models and actors and spent the night with your choice for about $150.

Realize I am dating myself because the days of decent hustlers bars were over a while ago. Still I enjoyed "what will I pick in the candy store" element of Rounds!

Their have always been two tiers of sex workers. Back in the 80's in L.A. We had the street hustlers that worked the less trendy parts of Santa Monica Blvd. usually hard on their luck, you could pick up a guy for a quick trick for $50. At the same time if you hired a guy from the ads in Frontiers you would be looking at $100-150 for an hour with a pro. Now the street hustlers are gone. They are on Adam4Adam, BackPage, Craig's List. The pros who used to be on the pages of Frontiers and The Advocate are on Rentboy, and Rentmen. There used be a third tier of very exclusive guys who only worked through agencies. Now it's all on the internet. The more things change...

I like hearing about the history. I doubt I would have done much hiring back then. The street scene would be too intimidating. I guess I could see hiring from a newspaper ad. It wouldn't be much different than hiring on A4A, CL, etc. But usually with the internet ads you get lots of pictures and longer ad copy. And you can communicate before committing to anything. Have all the agencies disappeared?

I was chatting once with a since-retired escort who started in the days before the internet. He mentioned how each appointment with a new client started with quite a few moments of awkward distrust, since there was no review site to vet the bad apples. Not only does Daddy's let you hear about the good ones, weed out the bad ones, but also start out on a good foot (or at least ten inches).

Same was very much possible with dancers at The Web, also No Parking, until their relatively recent closures. No longer living in NYC I can't check firsthand, but would be surprised if it was not still the case with some dancers at Castro, also dancer night at Nowhere, the occasional pickup at Townhouse, some Spunk/Monster dancers, etc etc.

Such wonderful memories of Rounds - truly a wonderful place for those of us of a certain 'age'. I was in NYC every couple of months on business in the late 80's and always made a point of ending my trip on the final evening at Rounds - had many wonderful adventures and I really don't ever recall paying more than $100. If you got to Rounds early some of the guys liked the idea of a 2nd drink in the dining room with dinner which was a great way to get to know each other. On the rare occasion you saw a guy a 2nd or 3rd time (I remember 2 overnights) at the bargain rate of $250. But then again we are talking more than 25 years ago! I think the rate of $100. was basically the going rate through almost all of the 80's and 90's in LA, San Fran and even NYC - I don't recall pay more except on maybe 1 or 2 occasions. Too many good memories of those days. YES - I know I can't live with out my internet but in some ways it has also taken the adventure out of the search compared to the old days of looking at the ads at the back of the Advocate magazine or the local gay rag in what ever major city you happened to be in ... I want to break into a resounding choral of ... 'Memories' LOL !!!

How about the Townhouse? I was there a few times, and guys would sometimes point out a young man and say that he was a "hustler."

(Interestingly, a fair number of its Yelp reviews are from women.)

FF, I do not know what the Townhouse is like now. But, in the 1990s, it was very different from Rounds. You never knew whom you would meet in Rounds, which was part of the charm of the bar. As I look back, I enjoyed it most in 1991, my first encounter with so many choices and the chance to have real conversations.

Back then, the Townhouse was more like a mens club with jackets and ties for the clients but not always upscale escorts. I hope the Townhouse has changed for the better (i.e. more hustlers/escorts).
