Joan Rivers Omitted From the Oscars' In Memoriam. Did "they" have the last laugh?

Every year, the Oscars' In Memoriam segment proves to be one of the most poignant and emotional moments of the entire year. At this year’s ceremony, the Academy added a nice, simple touch of animating the late stars’ names and pictures with a beautiful watercolor effect.

 

Of course, this doesn’t matter much for Joan Rivers who was completely forgotten in the segment this year.

 

I'm aware she wasn't a movie star, even though she started as an actress and she appeared on many TV shows, but she was mishpucha and also feared by all movie stars.

 

"It would have been nice, especially considering the impact she had on the awards season, but Cooper [Melissa's son] and I have been overwhelmed with support and love over my mom’s passing and we choose to focus on that," Melissa said

She did direct the movie "Rabbit Test" in 1978, and the Academy does honor directors:

I read that the "In Memoriam" people have to be members of the Academy to be mentioned and Rivers wasn't

I think they need to be actors, members of the academy or have contributed to the film industry with their work.

IMO, Rivers contributed to the meta-industry, i.e. the awards shows. Also, I skipped the Oscars this year, but don't they show famous snippets of films by those honored in that segment? There isn't much to be shown for Joan.

There were many on the Oscar's memorial site that were not included in the broadcast. That memorial site has what looks like over 150+ people on it. Not an easy task to judge who should be included and who should not, but certainly seems like the Academy dropped the ball with Joan being left off the broadcast version.

Melissa Rivers" comment said it best. And after all, a passing reference on a "Memoriam" segment is not that big a deal. She WILL be remembered with fondness and a bit of relief that her mouth has been stilled.
