If there had been someone behind you, I'm sure that person would have given you the penny. I'm not sure what the point is in paying in cash, unless you have undeclared income you're trying to hide. The only time I pay in cash is when I want to keep the expense private (i.e. pretty much just when paying escorts), or if the expense is around $10 or less. There are still some old ladies at the grocery store who pay by check. Really silly. If you regularly pay fairly large purchases (on the order of $100) with cash, you're losing out on free airline tickets or upgrades, hotel rooms in Europe, and so on. There's a reason they don't print bills over $100. That's because no one with a legitimate expenditure would ever use that size of a bill. Maybe they should have one of those "Take a penny, leave a penny" containers there. I almost always have enough change because I carry my change in a coin purse...

I agree totally. But after I asked at Whole Foods (see above), I also talked to the people at Starbucks and the main library in Philadelphia. I was not surprised that Starbucks often is paid in one hundred dollar bills. But, I was shocked that occasionally people try to pay small library fines with one hundred dollar bills. The library sends them to the local bank to get smaller bills.

There is a reason that credit cards are convenient, exorbitant interest rates and fees. When you tip with a credit card, 1% or so of the service person's gratuity is going to American Express or Visa or Discover. I would bet that there will not be a single service person with a commercial during the Super Bowl. Can you say the same about AE.

I have one credit card. I use it for many purchases in lieu of cash and i pay it off in full each month. I like cash because the temptation to overspend or impulse buy is lessened for me if I have to actually count out the dollars. Perhaps I am a three dimensional learner. In addition, the only identity stolen from cash is a dead forefather.

So these might not be reasons for you to use cash, but they are three legitimate reasons that I will use cash regularly although not exclusively.

You are right about the points though, i just bought all new appliances for the kitchen using nothing but American Express points.

I need to apologize to PK. I asked a long-time cashier at Whole Foods about one hundred dollar bills. His response: "even on days when most of the purchases are credit card, I still get two or three hundred dollar bills a hour."

He gets $200-300 an hour? He must be really hot. I think he was trying to tell you something.

We're a long ways from that stop-n-shop. This thread has taken a rather pleasant turn, thanks to azdr and Whipped Guy. ;)

About 40 years ago I used to carry my coins in a little plastic coin "purse" like the ones pictured earlier in the thread. I happened to take it out of my pocket and extract some change in front of my boss at the time. He said OMG you keep your change in a "cunt". After that, I started keeping the coins loose in my pocket and have ever since.
