johnnyboy -- the wedding ring on the 3rd finger of the left hand is not a "Catholic" thing but has roots going back to both ancient Egyptian and Roman (and not Roman Catholic) customs. The placement is tied to the ancient belief about the "vena amoris" the vein of love that flows from that finger directly to the heart. Those who use it on the right hand just do it without any idea of custom or history. Oh, and BTW - even in some Catholic countries in Eastern Europe, it is more often the custom to wear it on the RIGHT hand.

Steven - in America that finger is also called the 3rd finger since the thumb is NOT counted. It is both 3rd finger (traditional) and for those who do not get it about the thumb... the 4th finger. Did you even bother to read the reference I made which at the end of the 1st paragraph says, "It may also be referred to as the third finger.[1]" So you are right - but I am also right... touche' as Europeans like to say!
