The third part of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Return of the King is the best one yet. My favorite parts are seeing some of the Hobbits including Pippin, Merry and of course Sam rise up to their respecitve challenges. Andy Sirkis is great as gollum.

Tolkien is turning in his grave

Referring to The Lord of the Rings as an Elijah Wood movie. Ouch! Shame on you, Dan! :p

RE: Legolas

Well, Orlando certainly gets a rise out of me! I'll also admit to a crush on Dominic Monaghan (Merry) dating back to the Hetty Wainthrop series.

You're right! Considering how good he is in this one, I should have referred to it as the "new Sean Astin movie." :+

And Gollum is a computer animation, not an actor. The actor provides the voice (and does it brilliantly, I agree) and also gave frameworks for the computer animators to move their creation. But Gollum is largely the creation of a computer. Which makes you wonder about some of the scenes where they wrestle with Gollum and things like that: they must have looked pretty stupid on the set wrestling with nothing at all.

He provides more then just visual reference. His way of moving is captured by a system and mapped onto the animation. He was on set playing Gollum for most of the scenes where they interact, including the wrestling (so he had to be painted out before Gollum could be put in).

But not all of those interacting scenes. One of the actors (Elijah, I think) has talked about wrestling with thin air in shooting one of the big scenes involving Gollum, with the animation put in afterwards.

To me the major achievement of Gollum is not the movement of the body but of the face, which is pure computer. The facial expressions show an accomplished computer actor, in fact a much better actor than either Elijah Wood or Sean Astin.

I liked Elijah Wood in Part One, but in Part Two I thought he was juvenile. It reminded me of the famous review of Katherine Hepburn on Broadway: she ran the whole gamut of emotions from A to B. Well, young Elijah, who in Part One showed a steady change in mood and emotion from start to finish, shows just one major emotion in Part Two and does it endlessly - and very boring it is too. I hope he improves in Part Three, because he was a big disappointment in Part Two after showing such ability in Part One.

Elijah has a lot more to do in Return, but like I said it's the others that really get to shine here. I don't want to say any more about Andy Sirkis' performance until you guys have seen it.

However, I did notice in trade ads that New Line is NOT pusing him for an Oscar nomination. As for Ian McKellan, he's excellent, but if he didn't win for Fellowship, I don't think he will win for this one. Not a lock- like that one should have been.

BTW, did A Beautiful Mind and Ron Howard REALLY win over Fellowship and Jackson??????

I saw it last night at midnight in NYC. The theatre was packed with Lord fans. It was a great night for a great show. I enjoyed the movie from the beginning to the end. The beginning was a bit slow for me but it picked up fast and I enjoyed it very much. The ending was nice and I was happy to see it end that way.

Ian was fantastic and I wondered when he was hold Elijah's hand in the end just how much he enjoyed that. :)

The battle scene with the men from the mountains was awsome!
