I have lived on border cities along the Canadian US border and generally Canadians are friendlier, smile more and are more reasonable in most areas of life. Americans are many things that are great, but one of the great things American are not, is Canadian.

I've known a lot of Canadians professionally and knew many in college and grad school. My experience is more neutral. They generally seem more low key than Americans but can be a bit smug about Canada, which has its own skels in the closet (their treatment of "First Nations" people is even worse than ours).

One thought: prostitution is legal in Canada. Americans face greater (legal, social, moral) barriers to entering the market, which would drive supply down and thus prices up.

I think you both hit the nail on the head. My guess is that the answer is somewhere between those two.
