This is the week when Broadway stars collect money after the show for Broadway Cares. Today I saw "Little Shop of Horrors" a really fun musical. After the show, the stars, Kerry Butler (Audrey) and Hunter Foster (Seymour) would pose with you for a photograph for a $20 donation. You get a polaroid in a holder with their autographs. It was terrific that they did this, being blinded by a flash for about an hour after they'd performed for almost 3 hours.

I couldn't resist the opportunity. Hunter is really, really cute and I got to put my arm around him (Kerry too) for a mere $20.

This is a great time to take in a Broadway show and make a contribution for a wonderful cause.

Actually I don't think the Broadway cares thing is limited to this week. I paid... errr donated... in December, March, April, July, and October.

Good cause, though... I am not complaining.

Broadway Cares is certainly a year-round thing, but I think this is the only week when the performers come out on stage after the show and ask the audience for donations. Usually things like autographed posters, etc. are for sale in the lobby. I could be wrong and perhaps it happens more often, which is great. Of course once a year is Broadway Bares, the big strip show, which is lots of fun and raises lots of dough.

Now THIS I want to see (after I see that show with the sedated smooth, naked college twink that someone posted about)

Saw Gypsy tonight. Bernadette auctioned off the necklace she wore tonight in the final number-brought in $1800. Of course you got to pick it up personally from her, and a kiss was thrown in when the bidding went over a grand. Last year at Hairspray if I remember correctly they auctioned off a score autographed by the composer and lyricist there in person. All out of my price range, but still great work for a good cause.

Just saw "The Boy from OZ" last week and they auction off a shirt that Hugh Jackman wore in the show and described by the funny moderator as having lots of his DNA...and it sold for $1,500. Plus a signed poster of Peter Allen's performance in Radio City Hall got over $2,000. All for a good cause.

And it's not limited to NYC, either. We saw The Full Monty last weekend and the cast was in the lobby afterwards, in their matching full length white bathrobes and butch clodhoppers. Surprising that they could dance that well wearing those. And, half of the money raised locally stays local. It was nice knowing that we were not only giving nationally (to a cute red head) but also to one of our favorite Houston AIDS charities!
