"Hallelujah! 2013 may be the year that it became cool again to be a Christian."

I see your point, although I read it as, "Hallelujah! [When the history of the 21st century is written,] 2013 may [turn out to] be the year that it became cool again to be a Christian." Isn't it funny how two people can interpret the same sentence so differently. Of course, that NEVER happens on this forum.

That's how I read it, too.

I read it similarly - 'One day in the future, we may look back & see...'

English was my *worst* subject in school. But even granted the interpretation

"Hallelujah! [When the history of the 21st century is written,] 2013 may [turn out to] be the year that it became cool again to be a Christian."

wouldn't one write "may [turn out to] have been the year". ?

Of course, I'm being a very tarnished kettle to even raise the question, I"m sure . . .

Don't get your hopes up quite yet. Cardinal Francis George, one of the hard line cardinals who is in Chicago, stated bluntly in an interview, that the Pope was merely restating the church dogma..." Hate the Sin and Love the Sinner" I don't think any of us or our children will live long enough for this arm of Christendom to change.... they haven't yet renounced the inquisition, or their support for the facist government in Itlay or the Nazi government in Germany so long as those governments protected the Church, the priests and the church property. Lots of nice words and symbolism here, and this pope is a master at manipulating the press to get the kind of publicity he wants.... Just don't hold your breath expecting a change.... IMHO.
