Both are VERY nice boutique style hotels.I would probably go with the St. Germain if I had to choose between the two.The rooms in the St.Paul are rather small. Both places are very"W" in their furnishings-ok if you like a very stark"clean"look .

I would also look at the Sofitel,The St. James, and the St. Suplice. All are in the same less is more chic.

That being said,if you are spending this kinda dough-why not the Inter Continental,The Omni,or the Hotel Vogue. All of these are full service places, with much larger rooms, pools, gyms, restos, room service, buisness centers etc.All are very high end.

The Hotel de le Montagne is also High End-HUGE room.MASSIVE bathrooms(seperate shower)and for the price of a good room at any of the others you can get a suite at the De Le Montagne.

Enjoy your stay-when are you going?

I know you love to read-if I may suggest STORIED STREETS,a very good intro on Montreals influence on writers.

Also GO TO THE MUSEUMS-the modern and the Beaux Arts both have stunning exhibits right now.Nan Golden at the Modern,Viullard at the Beax Arts.

Enjoy!

Definitely the Hotel Le Germain. They have an intensive pre-screening of guests for lingusitic and cultural ability which weeds out the riff-raff. Beyond that, their Big Dick Contests on Friday nights are a real hoot!

Where are these hotels compared to the Hotel Goveneur where I always stay -- in walking distance to Campus, Stock, Adonis, Taboo and so convenient for the night's hottie to walk into your room on scheduled. Plus, fully secure parking.:)

They are both still within walking distance of the gay village, but it's a longer walk ... :(

Le Germain is probably about a mile west of the village and a few blocks north, on Rue Mansfield close to Rue Sherbrooke W.

Hotel Place D'Armes is slightly closer, but still a fair walk - it's just south of the Autoroute Ville-Marie, close to the junction of Rue St-Urbain and Rue St-Antoine W.

Yes,all of the stated hotels are a bit of a hike from the joys of the Village-which I prefer. It gives me a nice bit of exercise in the morning-afternoon.

Montreal Has a grand subway system. If yo buy a pass or a pack of ten tix it is an extremely reasonable mode of transportation-very pleasant ride with lots of eye candy.By the way-take the last car(this is becoming a universal cruising tactic)Your ride to the village from anywhere downtown is not more than 10-20 min's.

I hate to beat a dead horse-but I am soooooo disgusted in the Gouveneurs treatment of returning guests that I will NEVER stay there again. It is a VERY low 3 star hotel.Terrible service, never remember your guest preference, crappy food(both in their tired restaurant and room service.Yes it is convienent to the boys-but I am not so fixated on Dick that I stand for bad service from a second rate tourist trap which charges more than they should for an inferior product.

The last time I stayed in Montreal I booked a 3 star through priceline(utilising BiddingForTravel.com)and got the Holiday in select in Chinatown-near the convention center. The room was larger than the Gouverneurs, furnisings were about the same(my room had a balcony which was great-sitting outside in the moning with my coffee, drinks at night)the batroom was at least twice the size of the bathrooms of the Gouv's.All for $40 USD less the the "club"rate at the gouv's.That's dinner!Or 5-6 lap dances at the campus!

Big guy:

I am sorry for your bad experiences at the Gouverneur, but I have to say that my experience has been the opposite.

I joined the "Club Gouverneur."

They always remember my preferences, I get free high speed internet access, I get a coupon for one free meal per day, and even when the hotel is booked (during busy times like Black and Blue or Pride) they squeeze me in somewhere.

It is also unbelievably easy and unobtrusive to bring a dancer back to your room.

Just another perspective.

Hi Marc,I know there is a large camp of guys who like the Gouv'.

I respect their right to spend their money as they wish.

However,I(obviously)will continue to "dis" the place.I am always one to yell from the rooftop regarding the emperors' new clothes.

As you can tell-I am one queen you don't want to piss off.

But I have friends(mostly older guys who like to drink and "have a good time")who ONLY stay at the Gouverneur.

Ah well, A' chaque son Gout.

By the way- arn't you going up soon?Bring some cool clothes!

As a closing let me just state-PLASTIC GLASSES!That is what they put in the rooms(and even the suites)of the Governeur. That is such a little thing I know-but it speaks volumes as to the quality of a hotel.

Thank you almost everyone. It's going to be a two-level room at HOTEL PLACE D'ARMES. Don't much care about gay neighborhoods (I live in one) or strip clubs (I resent them).

Online, Interconti, Omni, etc. looked hoRRid.

BigP, Thank you very much for the book recommmendation. I checked it out on Amazon, and as much as I enjoy a geographically-appropriate read before, and during, a trip (I read 'Sheltering Sky" while traveling, by rail, 'round Morocco) I think I will have to pass, only because I'm currently 33% of the way through "The Oxford Book Of American Short Stories", and if I manage to finish that before our trip, the last weekend in July (it's coordinated with our NYC trip), "Bulfinch's Mythology" is next on my list. Nevertheless, I may make an exception.
