Bigotry wrapped in a flimsy shell of 'pride' is still bigotry

And, of course, there's Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

A rush to judgment on any topic is unattractive at best.

lol....well being of Southern roots, born and raised....Stupidity yes, but at the core, racism and hatred is rampant, make no mistake about that. Spin it anyway you like gentlemen, but what lays at the heart of everything is what is said behind closed doors.

I just returned after a 30+ year absence......and nothing has changed, not here.

Several years ago I wrote an edgy guide to Atlanta. I'd been going down (hmmm, should I rephrase that?) every few months, freelancing for a local publication, and had experienced nothing but "Southern hospitality." But when I started digging a little deeper for irreverent info and quotes, I started hearing flippant comments -- from supposed liberals -- like "MARTA: Moving African-Americans Rapidly through Atlanta." So yes, unfortunately the bigoted mindset lingers... for generations.

So, all Southerners are racists, overtly or closeted.

I agree, and what is so amusing is that I was in LA for the better part of 30 years. People were much more open about their feelings toward other minorities. They said what was on their minds and rarely mixed words. Among Latinos especially, which is a rapidly growing demographic in LA, racist jokes were said out loud, and they never made an apology for it.

After moving back here however, I have heard all kinds of code words and phrases like the one you mentioned. Racism has gone undercover, and is spoken quietly in small groups and only among a 'select' crowd. My observation is that they are politically correct when necessary, but the core beliefs have not changed.

Stop it Seek...of course not, not even during the worst of times, and I did not say that they were. If that is what you read from my post, you misunderstood.

Hispanics or latinos (Native American-Spanish mixed people) always wonder what's wrong with a lot of people here who are born citizen yet they are poor and can't see a dream in this country... "What's wrong with rednecks and inner city blacks?"

This is the way a lot of guys who call themselves redneck look like, they eat and drive, we pay their ER, Medicare, Social Security, etc. They are the real takers and their numbers are massive in the poorest areas of the poorest states from Appalachia and the South.

After Katrina, the Vietnamese rebuilt and they were up and running very soon... Other minorities (rednecks are a minority) still blame all their issues on Katrina.

West Virginia before, during and after Senator Byrd has received so much money from the Federal Government, and still is one of the 10 poorest states.

The National Annenberg Election Survey asked people to rank ethnic groups in the areas of intelligence, trustworthiness and work ethic. 75% or more of the non-black respondents in the southern states starting with Texas and moving East to include Florida plus oddly Pennsylvania rated blacks low in the aforementioned categories. Every other state in the country ranked blacks as an ethnic group higher.

I lived for a few years in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi and while there I thought I'd left the United States. I know all Southerners aren't racists and I know there are racists/low IQ people within every race. Younger people (teenagers - late twenties) I know are less race conscious than people of my age and/or their parents. So maybe with the simple passage of time overall attitudes will improve.

No, I didn't think you believe that, but you (and others) are painting with a pretty broad brush, IMO - if we are to judge by your posts (and that's all we have).

lol - this is why I avoid the Politics forum.

But I think this thread is showing a lot of prejudice.

And then there are the escorts who openly discriminate against anyone who isn't white. A few of those and some well known who practice that.

Yes, I'm black and speak Blackanese, a few escorts have told me they wouldn't take me as a client because they don't do black clients... My money is just like your money.

Please, let's close this thread.

lol....This thread has certainly taken an odd turn...Who knew that one little 'redneck' twink with a Confederate flag on the wall would cause so much discussion.

Threads have a life of their own... This picture of him has generated more talk than Brad Lautner's picture giving the finger.

As the OP thanks a lot for participating, I think it's time to close this.

Well I disagree of course, partly because racism is painted with a broad brush in this country. Are things better, well of course they are, but to insinuate that when you see an adult, and I use that term loosely, with a confederate flag hanging on his wall, and you suggest to me that he displays it proudly because of stupidity, or some other subtle meaning that it might represent to him, and not because racism, well I just don't buy that. I am guessing that you have never lived in the South, nor experienced the daily acts of prejudice that many minorities feel daily.

You can judge me by my posts, what I said is what I meant. I could tell you stories that you just would not believe. Racism is and will be a problem in this country for as long as I am alive. It is a 'black hole' in many respects. There is deep seeded hatred in this country, and I do not see it dissipating anytime soon.

Unfortunately this subject seems to come up more often than it should, and guess what, no one ever ever ever agrees on any of it, and you and I will never agree here, because you don't, and in all fairness, can't see and never will see what it is that I see, because you have not lived it. That's just a fact Seek.

Meaning no disrespect, especially in a heated topic such as this is, but it's deep-SEATED, not deep-seeded. (Besides, deep-seeded could have other meanings on this forum, and I don't think we really want to go there.)

Sorry to interrupt...:p

lol lol...I think we all needed that about now.....very funny, but being a 'redneck' of sorts, I feel that I should get a pass.

And with that I am ordering pizza, literally. Dominos I think, the delivery guy is kinda cute, so when he comes, I always make sure I have a cute little top on.

I haven't seen this in a long time, but somehow I'm reminded of the Jeff Foxworthy routine where he has all these re-invented "if you're a redneck" phrases - like "preshadit" to mean "appreciate it" etc.

Enjoy your delivery guy, um, pizza...;)

I am amazed you know which delivery guy you will get in advance. I never get the cute one :p
