Why does an escort have a picture posted of him "shooting us the bird"? I have never understood this. His is not the only picture of an escort having an add doing the same thing. It is childrish at the very lease and insulting at the worse.

Maybe some guys are attracted by the bad boy image it projects?

I'm not. I agree, it pushes an escort toward the "pass" column.

Hey poolboy, I don't think that flipping "the bird" means the same thing as it does to my generation. Using swear words, and crude gestures like that are clearly meant in jest in many social situations among guys that are younger, and among many of those in the younger generation it has taken on a different meaning. Sometimes it is taken almost as funny and sarcastic greeting. I personally did not see that pic as offensive, but then I a lot of these guys in there 20's and 30's hang out with me, so I understand some of the social peculiarities of that generation.

There are about 8 guys here working on the house, I'm in the middle of renovations, several of the guys swear and flip the bird at each other throughout the course of conversation during the day. They are always laughing and telling funny stories, so I know that they are not really made at each other. My generation it was meant in anger, that has clearly changed.

And a complete turn off. I once hired a young black man who did the "thug thing" in his ad. I was curious. When he showed up he was rather well-spoken and not "thuggish" at all. I asked him about it and he said "you white boys love the black thug thing, so that's why I try to give them." I was rather dumbfounded but it may help explain these kinds of ads.

I think you're right. Problem is, not many of their generation hire. Wrong message to send to the target market.

Exactly, it's a "gangsta" image meaning tough-cool to younger folks but trashy to older men like us who have to pay to have fun with a younger man.

Btw, I'm not even sure his generation use the word "folks" either.

Val - I'm surprised you are so reasonable here. But at any rate ..

Nope. It just means they have no class/taste. Trust me.

Also: crackheads sagging their pants is not a metaphor for oppressed minorities 'loosening up their belt' on the daily struggles they face (in case there was any question).

I think you are exactly right. Had a cute dancer about to do a back flip off the back of the boat the other day, and I grabbed my camera to snap a shot, he started to laugh and 'flipped me the bird' ...I never for a second took that as a negative...and you are right also, I think the word "folks" died a quiet death a long time ago.

Not really sure why that would surprise you. I think that there are great differences in the attitudes and how your generation conducts themselves socially, or any generation for that matter. I have cousins your age heading off to Yale to study law, and I know guys your age doing vastly different things with there life...no? I have hired young guys for the weekend who are not nor ever will be on the same level or will ever live their life either financially, socially, or otherwise like my cousins will. I think that it is wrong to judge a person on any level. Next time you are at 'Burning Man' you should take a good look around. We should celebrate our differences.

How I grew up and was raised in an environment of privilge does not make me any better than the young guy who I hire for the weekend and flips me the bird as he dives off the back of the boat, not in my eyes anyway. Now everyone is different, and I know many on the MF will feel differently, and sadly I am as guilty as anyone sometimes, but every now and again I like to slap myself back into reality. Just my humble opinion.

My contractor is 26 years old, has had his own company for 7 years, started doing construction at 15 years old, then started his own business. He now employs 16 people on a steady basis, including his father, and still can't keep up, and kept the crew going, paid all their salaries through the last financial downturn. He just told me this morning that he is buying his older brother a house who is down on his luck right now. OK the point? He wears his pants down below his ass and he is not a crackhead. So no there isn't any question, but everything is not black and white.

If you go on grindr or manhunt you'd be surprised about so many young guys with similar kind of pictures in their profiles.

I don't think it would matter when they run for office in 10 to 20 years, after all many of them have other kind of pictures that are public and more entertaining: possing in front of the mirror shirtless or naked, smoking pot, or just sex videos for everybody to see.

Ok I'm in my 50's. I can see either use when I think about my life. In fact when I was in college- talking joking around with friends- if you were mad or possibly if someone said a sarcastic cutting remark you might use it- not me so much but the frat guys. However what you do with your friends in a secure environment and situation and what you do in presenting yourself to the public are entirely different things. Even if trying to make a memorable escorting ad- especially in one of the cities with a lot of escorts like New York or LA, I don't think it's appropriate or makes a very appealing picture. I guess- no I know- I'm just not 'hipster' enough.

Going to have to agree to disagree here. I'll leave the socio-analysis to greater minds like you.

And at burning man, I saw no sagging pants. Nor was I flipped off. It seemed like expressions of vulgarity were there because they really were drawing attention to deeper issues. That being said, just because it happens at Burning Man doesn't necessarily mean that its good or right, either.

Yes, but in those cases they're presumably marketing to their own generation and likely hoping for like-minded folk, in which case flipping the bird is a reasonable filter. In an professional escort ad it is not. What troubles me is the apparent inability to distinguish.

I am not disagreeing with you Gman. I was only trying to explain that many, obviously not all, young people see the flipping of the bird as gesture that is not as negative as our generation sees it. I don't really have an opinion as to whether or not using "the bird" in an ad is appropriate. Personally it doesn't bother me, and it doesn't bother me when some of these kids do it when we are hanging out on the weekend. I think that it is very simple really. If it is something that people find distasteful, they can just click 'forward' and move to the next escort...

And Gman, you are very "hip"....make no mistake about that. You don't have to drop your pants or flip the bird to be 'hip'........lol lol

First, my congratulations to the 25 year old owner of the contracting company for his unusual success at such an early age.

Last summer I had damage to my condo and had loads of workers here for 3 months. I became very friendly with the owner of the general contracting company probably mid 30's). One day we were sitting on the deck discussing status of the work over a cup of coffee. I jokingly brought up the old image of the "plumber's crack". He said his emplyees had to wear pants with a belt or whatever so there pants were not drooping down. I asked if it was because of the look. He said his insurance company said that the drrooping pants could cause the person wearing them to trip or not have proper control of their movements. Never crossed my mind but sounds logical

If a young guy tells you: ":You are a mess", that's a good thing, it means you are a fun guy.

Exactly!

You'd better wonder if your message is understood before sending it, the same with pictures if you want to make a living from them.

Actually as an escort sponsor myself, I'm a well-pleased member of the target audience and I encourage such "cocky" behavior. He's a top telling me he's "down to fuck"... The symbolism speaks for itself, concise and to the point. I keep a collection of favorite bird IM's on my phone. I number "cocky punk next door" among my favorite type of roleplay character.
