GMA's Sam Champion is Engaged

It was announced this morning on Good Morning America that Sam Champion, the shows long-time weatherman, is engaged to marry his partner of many years, Ruben Robierb. I for one applaud his public announcement because he represents one of the best examples of a positive role model of a gay professional. The public's support and congratulations have overwhelmed the couple.

Thanks for posting this BG, I say "baby steps"...hopefully one of these days we will be able to talk about the announcement of a wedding like this without having to discuss the social parameters of announcing a "same sex marriage"...despite what many think, it takes courage to stand up and make announcements like this.

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts married a week ago and several of his guests just before the wedding congratulated him. The day after, he started with "The world is different today", flashed the ring, and said "I got married", and most of the guests on the show congratulated him.

 

Nobody mentioned that it was a same-sex marriage. It was just "married".

Sam's future spouse is 34. He happens to be a friend from Brazil I've known for a number of years. Rubem's a very talented photographer who's been widely exhibited in Europe and Brazil and has work in important collections. He moved to Miami about 4 years ago and has established himself there in the city's booming arts community. He and Champion met in Miami. They plan to marry officially in New York and then celebrate the wedding in Florida.

I used to see Sam all the time in NY, but it was with a different guy (a Black guy). Guess he dumped that one.

I guess the age difference explains it. Interesting. I bet if it were an old white straight man marrying a woman young enough to be his son the media wouldn't have ignored that one. Double standard?

Well, I just married my Brazilian partner in NY in August. He's also 34 and I'm 66! We've been together 8 years. Quite a few Brazilians find older guys attractive. It's an interesting cultural difference. But there has been a recent story about an 18 year old football player from North Dakota who was kicked off his college football team a month ago when he was seen kissing his 65 year old boy friend at an away game. So it's not unique to Brazil. There's much more variety in the world than the conventional wisdom seems to allow for!

I completely agree with you. My boyfriend is 23 years younger than me. I just don't know why they didn't report the age difference in the story.
