For August...I usually stay in a B&B in the Castro. I have tried many times to love the city, but 'like' is about as far as I have gotten. It's probably because I was stationed at Oakland in the military for several months at the height of the Vietnam war.

Is the Castro still the place to stay? If not, I would love some recommendation in other parts of the city. I am not a Hilton/Marriott person. I will consider evry suggestion closely! Thank you very much in advance.

I think that "The Castro" is still the place to stay. I always stay at the "Parker Guest" house, a few blocks from the heart of the Castro. It is run with a flair for the elegant and a time long past, but they will also guide you through your stay, with the care of a 5 star hotel. The staff is impeccable and the hotel is spotless and is a wonderful reminder of a time gone to soon.

I prefer to stay in Union Square. Specifically, I almost always stay at the hilton. The pricing at the hilton can range from crazy expensive to relatively cheap. I guess it depends on your intentions while in the city. But, Union Square is a quick trolley ride to the Castro and is still very close to shopping, attractions and night life. The only area of the city that I wouldn't stay in is the warf; way too touristy for my tastes.

I have not been in San Francisco in years but the 3 times that I have been there I stayed at the Grovesnor in Nob Hill. I always liked the rooms since they are basically mini apts. Also, the location is only a few blocks from Chinatown, Polk St and the Financial District. Also, I believe that it is right near the Trolley Line.

I love San Francisco; I have never stayed in Castro. I prefer Union Square, Nob Hill or the financial district. Transportation with the Subway or the trolley cars is very convenient way to travel. If you’re not going during a busy time you can score a nice hotel by bidding on Price line.

FYI....The 'Parker Guest House' are two 'Turn of the Century' mansions that sit side by side and that have been meticulously renovated and are gay owned and operated.

It depends on what kind of lodging you like and what kind of neighborhood you like. When I was young and had no money (1960s), I used to stay at the Embarcadero Y, which is now a boutique hotel, since the Embarcadero area is now gentrified. When the Castro became a gay area, I stayed at a very nice gay b&b, but the owners eventually sold it and moved to Italy. In recent years, I have preferred to stay in SoMa, which is convenient to bars and clubs (neither of which I stay up late enough to visit anymore), transportation, restaurants, museums and concert halls, and the ball park. I don't need luxury, so I usually stay at one of the cheap small hotels in the area, like the Mosser. I hardly ever go near the Castro now, except for nostalgic reminiscence.

Unless you're 'in love' with the Castro and want to hit the bars and the gay scene day and night, I'd consider different options and try new things and places. You might be able to find a reasonably priced hotel in the Union Square area.

Thank you for the recommendations.

I had not considered near Union Square, but now it is my first choice.

I should have mentioned that I have stayed at the Parker Guest House three times, but not since my last visit to the city a decade ago. This time I will not have a car, so near Union Square seems a better choice. I like the Parker Guest House very much, but I want to try somthing different...even if it turns our to be a mistake.

Thanks to Charlie in particular for mentioning the Mosser.
