A Lucky Man on July 4th

July 4th, 1939, is the day that baseball legend Lou Gehrig announced his retirement due to the disease now named after him. In his speech, he talked about lucky he was:

They paraphrased and reordered his speech in the movie to make it more dramatic but it is still stirring and heartbreaking to hear about a man cut down in the prime of his life. Unfortunately, those of us old enough to have seen the 70s and 80s know all too well about men cut down in their prime. So to Lou and to all of our lost friends and departed lovers, you are not forgotten and you inspire us still.
