Although there are other places on the web to ask this question, the responses will be more entertaining here.

I was wondering if anyone knows if it is better to reserve a room or just show up and see if you get a better rate. I'll be in Las Vegas for a weekend in February. From what I have seen so far in my search, prices sure have dropped!

Why not just use the link at the top of this page, HooBoy's Discount Travel and contribute to this site at the same time? I have checked the rates and they are quite low.

BTW it is usually more costly (in Las Vegas) to drop in and rent a room at any decent hotel. Many will even tell you that they're booked.

That's been my experience. Wouldn't recommend going to Las Vegas without reservations. The suggestion to use the link on this site is a great idea. Although I've never used them, I have friends that swear by them. Plan to use them on my next trip. ;-)

One will almost never get the best rate at any hotel anywhere by just showing up at the door. This is probably especially true at holiday locations such as Vegas or Orlando, where most people get their hotel rooms through package deals. Even if you could get a good deal this way, you have no way of comparing various hotels in this manner.

When I went to Vegas last February, I got a great deal at the Golden Nugget downtown. Although at first glance, you might be turned off because it's not on the strip, parking is free at the Golden Nugget for hotel/casino guests, as is the parking for most of the hotels on the strip. The Strip is quite long, and it's handy to have a rental car anyways. With the package deal I had, the car was just about free anyways, and the Golden Nugget is a AAA-4 Diamond hotel. I would have paid a lot more for a similarly-rated hotel on the Strip, and still would have needed a car. In addition, the "Fremont Street Experience," which is in front of the Golden Nugget, was one of my favorite Vegas attractions, and it changes more than the other ones (i.e. pirate show, volcano, etc.).

I would definitely check out package deals to Vegas (you don't have to get a package which includes airfare--I didn't). You can get them on expedia, travelocity, unitedvacations.com, deltavacations.com, etc...

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably use my Hilton points and stay at the Las Vegas Hilton (forgot I had them), but in the future, I'll try the travel service here. I feel kinda foolish for not trying it earlier. Any reviews of the Discount Travel service on this site?

I'll be in Vegas Feb. 21-23, so if anyone wants to direct me to any non gambling fun, fire away. It will be nice - the week before I'll be working about 300 kms northeast of Yellowknife. The highs are about -25C currently.

Hi,just got back from Vegas(my b'day trip)I use a service called TravelAxe which is a travelsite search engine.Pulls rates from over 20 travel"discounters"and finds you the best rates for your dates.

I would save my HHilton points(unless ypu have buckets of them)for a more costly destination.Using points for hotels in Vegas is like using a frequent flyer points to go from Vancouver to Seattle! You can do it,but it is not maximising your points.

Had a great time at the Cobalt and the Freezone.

For eye candy may I suggest either the Palms or the Hard Rock(Hard Rock is close to the bars-but is $$$$ on weekends-the hilton is not to far from the bars, cheap cab ride-and they often discount-check Travelaxe AND the LV hilton website to see about good rates)

DO NOT JUST WALK UP AND ASK FOR A ROOM-you will usually(not always, but more often than not)get a bum deal.

Enjoy
