I just saw the Disney film "John Carter" starring a muscle stud with the unlikely name of Taylor Kitsch. It's based on an Edgar Rice Burroughs novel from a century ago - fantasy story of a Confederate Army veteran in the 1860s who suddenly finds himself on Mars and embroiled in the battles between different civilizations on that planet. He seems to spend most of his time on Mars shirtless or with very skimpy, revealing garments, showing off a superb physique. Handsome man with limited acting ability at this point, but good for action adventure. The film is sheer nonsense but very watchable! Lots of CGI effects, loud music, and much cartoonish action. And for those who've watched the major cable TV serials of the last few years, lots of familiar faces in important roles, including some of the stars of the "Rome" series. (I've wondered for years whatever became of super-stud James Purefoy. Here he is in the flesh!)

Out of this world....

I am a big fan of science fiction. I love to read it. I love to watch it.

Back in the late 70’s, before home theater sound systems, I hooked up dual speakers to my television set in order to watch episodes of the original Battlestar Galactica each week. I say all of this by way of telling you …well…I love science fiction.

So it may not strain credulity to hear that I loved John Carter.

While I have never read the science fiction writings of Edgar Rice Burroughs, this film provides me with the first prompting to do so. Frankly, I am embarrassed that being such a big fan of science fiction, I had never known that ERB had written anything other than the Tarzan series. I will be looking for the story that this film is drawn from because I would like to know how much of the plot came from ERB and how much came from the filmmakers.

If I can take out of my mind the mouth watering images of the lead actor (and his oft mentioned perfect nipples), I would try to share how visually stunning this film was in my eyes. Yes, I haven’t read or heard the story, and yet it was as comfortable as an old pair of slippers because earlier filmmakers have mined this material so many times before; and even saying that, it was still fresh and new to me.

OK, I don’t go into these types of films trying to apply a critical eye (that is for later viewings). I go to be entertained. To be transported from my dreary hum drum, into something other than my life. I got transported alright, and it was all right.

The real shame it seems to me is that Disney has done such an awful job of selling this film. I have read that they were looking for a film that could act as a tent pole for future sequels. The critic’s opinion notwithstanding, I think they got just what they were looking for. Every penny they spent is up on the screen. Of course I attended an IMAX 3D screening, but I was dazzled by the sheer spectacle.

Well, OK, you can tell I liked it and frankly I am not unused to being on the opposite side of critical opinion. But I am afraid more people won’t see this film in its theatrical version because critics and studio watchers have said the film is going to lose money, and everyone has to be careful of their own spending today (with the high cost of ticket prices and popcorn etc.). But as I said, every penny is on the screen.

On my way out of the theater another audience member asked me if I liked the film, I told him I thought it was great and that I thought Disney had promoted the film badly. He told me he liked this film better than AVATAR.

I will be doing my part by going to see it again before the IMAX engagement ends and although I am spending much less on DVDs nowadays, this film will end up in my collection when it is released.

And yes, OK, the lead actor is very hot and spends most of the film without a shirt and has nipples of death and who cares if he isn’t as good an actor as Olivier and did I mentionhewashottolookatandspendsmostofthefilmwith..........?

Oooh, there's those nipples again. Eminently suckable! Yes, I agree with Jackhammer, it's a very entertaining film. It's got every science fiction trope you've ever seen before, all mashed up together, and the big bucks they spent on special effects are all up on the screen, and I'd love to see a sequel! And I agree that Disney did a lousy job of selling it. They probably figured that it ran way over budget and would never make it back, so why throw out lots more money on promotion. Bean-counters mentality.

John Carter DVD

I rarely ever dig up an Old Thread But...I Rented from Redbox The "John Carter on Mars" DVD. IMHO this movie suffered only in the fact it did not receive enuff if any PR Work? The production values and some very good A List Actors make it enjoyable! Taylor Baby has a Fine Bod!

Antonio Sabbato Jr did a very low production value version on SYFY last year with an ex Female Porn Legend! BUT as long as Antonio was wearing very little I found that version not so bad! :p

There's a shot of him walking up a hill..the dude has Gorgeous Calf Muscles!
