For those of us who find tall blond twinks the absolute end, run, don't walk, to the nearest theater showing the new British movie of Nicholas Nickleby. Young Charlie Hunnam, so adorable in the Brit version of Queer As Folk, has grown into a twink stud (contradiction in terms?) at 22 and just eats up the screen in this movie. Especially the scene in the boys school where he appears shirtless -- the man has been working out, but not enough to destroy the total twink lusciousness!

Just put his name in your webbrowser and check out the pics on the fan sites....

and happy new year to everyone....

I think he had the mole in Queer as Folk as well, but don't actually recall. But those lips are heavenly, aren't they?

Saw the film last week.Charlie Hunan-while stunningly beautiful-is out of his league here,as is Jamie Bell. They are the only off notes in a superb cast. This is the sort of production you USED to see on PBS (only lionheart or whatever english studio made those sweeping sagas made better films than this)It is worth seeing-but not great.

I saw NN the other day, and have to confess that I wept unashamedly at several points, which is probably the appropriate response to Dickens at his most affecting. The entire production is brilliantly conceived and beautifully executed.

Many critics have panned Hunnam. I disagree. The principal characters in most Dickens novels are impossibly virtuous, and (with the possible exception of Pip in Great Expectations) show virtually no character development. They function as yardsticks against which to measure the events and characters they encounter, and as the author's censor against the wrongs of his day. So I thought Hunnam's portrayal was appropriate -- a angelic figure floating through the educational and financial miasma of mid-Victorian England.

The shirtless scene is equalled, if possible, by the overtly sm scene in which Smyke is tied up for a whipping -- again shirtless, and surprisingly hunky in his upper body development for a lifelong cripple deprived of proper nourishment since infancy. The scenes between Nicholas and Smyke become increasingly homoerotic, verging on sexual. Smyke's death scene, lovingly attended by Nicholas, was the emotional high point of the film for me, tenderly acted and beautifully edited. The whipping scene owes a lot to traditional imagery of Christ on the Cross, as well as portaits of St. Sebastian, and I seem to recall at least one scene in which Nicholas cradles Smyke in a Pieta pose (Nicholas as Mary, Smyke as Christ).

For those with a lit crit bent, much can be made of Smyke's Christlike suffering, especially interesting and ironic given the revelation of his true identity. That revelation acts as a Last Judgment. NN as a novel is perhaps the most overtly religious of Dickens' works -- the mention of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress is one of Dickens' few overt Christian referents, as opposed to cultural referents like the celebration of Christmas. And it is the most homoerotic Dickens as well. Those of us who find that faith and homosexuality belong together will find this film more than satisfying.

I didn't realize Charlie Hunnam was in the British Queer as Folk. Was he Justin? Does anyone have any hot pics of him from that series? He was in the Fox show Undeclared last year wasn't he? He is a cutie!

Yes, Charlie Hunnam was "Justin" in the Brit QAF. (Character names were different all the way 'round.)

The DVD is actually worth having. The DVD is poorly produced (only four chapter stops for the entire season, if memory serves) but it's still worth having.

Yes... and both Charlie and the kid who played Steven (the main character) in Undeclared are both extremely fuckable!
