In September of this year, I hope to be on a tour of "The Best of Eastern Europe" through Grand Circle Travel. The tour begins on the 14th, but I'd like to spend a few days as a solo traveler in the vibrant city of Berlin and need some hotel suggestions as well as "must dos" and "sees." I'd prefer to stay in a gay neighborhood or near one, but this is NOT imperative. Cost should be moderate, too! I like ambience and comfort and amenities but not necessarily high end!

I have been able to get great deals at the Grand Hyatt and the Marriott, both at Potsdammer Platz... so right next to the major subway system..... wonderful hotels, more on the high end, but very helpful staff at both and no problem having guests arrive and depart, as long as they are dressed appropriately. The concierge at the Hyatt was especially helpful in recommending places to go and see, as well as getting me tickets to "sold out" performances.

I love the Marriott on Potsdamer Platz (on the high end and not in the gay area). That's where I would usually stay while in Berlin, but I don't think this is what the OP is looking for.

You might want to stay in Schöneberg, the gay neighborhood. My suggestions would be the Axel hotel http://www.axelhotels.com/berlin/index.php?lang=en&h=1 or the Toms Hotel. Check out this link
