(Reuters) - A serial burglar nicknamed the "Barefoot Bandit" was sentenced on Friday in Seattle to 6-1/2 years in prison for his guilty plea to federal charges stemming from a sensational, two-year crime spree as a sometimes-shoeless teenage runaway.

 

The federal judge also ordered that Colton Harris-Moore, 20, serve his federal sentence simultaneously with a state term of more than seven years in a move his lawyers say could see him freed before his 26th birthday.

Excuse me if I'm mistaken by any means, but why does everyone assume someone going to prison is going to fucked or raped? I also knew a guy (strictly friends) who spent 7 years in prison, but we took HIV tests together months after the fact and he was negative. So I don't think it goes down bareback style like that.

This guy was actually pretty famous in Washington state- he eluded capture I think for over a year. He stole several planes from people. He learned to fly planes from playing flight simulator- of course he usually crashed them- but he managed to walk away from the crashes. He became something of a folk hero to a lot of people. As for the original topic of this thread - I wonder what the actual risk is to him being forced to have sex with someone. He's a big guy- I don't know if he's muscular- but he's 6'5"- I wonder if that puts him at more risk as someone might want to make an example of the 'big guy'.

A friend, about 5'9" but very muscular, was serving a three week sentence for what would be considered a white collar crime. He was placed with hardened criminals. Three inmates attacked him and attempted to rape him. The attack was stopped when the officer on duty was alerted. Many inmates are in for the long term and have nothing to lose with an additional charge. They occupy their time by working out, getting bigger and bigger. So, yes, it does happen and something to be concerned about.

I believe he crashed every plane he stole. Walking away from the crashes says as much about the certification process of the FAA as it does about CHM's "skill". He also has stated that he wants to be a pilot but someone with his mental attitude (and criminal background) is not anyone I would wish to join the pilot ranks.

Okay..I have a question. Everybody is talking about this guy getting it in prison. Sure, I've watched OZ but does that really happen all that much in today's prison? I read an article that says much of that hardly goes on with anywhere near the frequency that it usually did at one time?

Well, just to set the record straight, I was half joking and half serious. It is not as bad in some prisons as it once was, but gang rapes still are more frequent than get reported. He may be tall and muscular, but he has a "young" face and "new meat" as new guys are often referred to are still sought out.... sometimes just to test them. I too have had friends and also a cousin who spent time in CA prisons... so he does have to be careful and play safe !! Some of the "lifers" don't have much to loose, as has been said. Sorry if my remarks were offensive... and as I also said, in spite of what he did, and he deserves to serve time, I still feel a bit sorry for him.

This kid had better learn some quick survival techniques in prison—because I have a feeling his notoriety and "folk hero" status aren't going to serve him too well in the big house.

 

Oh, and the thing about prison rape is that much of it goes unreported and the stats are already quite high. Will he get raped as soon as he walks in the door? Probably not. It will take at least five minutes.

Exactly Diverdan, "New Meat" is the correct word here. And it does happen far more than people would think. I have a cousin who works at Corcoran State Prison, trust me when I say this, it does happen!!! 6ft or not, I don't care how tough he "Thinks" he is, those guys just see one thing..."New Meat" And sorry about assuming that you were joking, I was just trying to calm Joey down, apparently without success..

It's funny that you use the word "sociopath," which is exactly what popped in my head when I read this thread (i.e. he'll be the one pissing in the bucket in solitary like Chris Keller, while Beecher waits for him in his cell).
