Rap Legend "Jam Master Jay" from the group "Run DMC" died tonight from a gunshot wound to the head. This was just reported on TV so the details are still sketchy. My first rap song was "Rappers Delight" which I memorized every word..He will be sorely missed..

My friend works for a news outlet and her station has already written an obit for R&B crooner "Barry White" whom is suffering from kidney failure. This is even worse for me because he was an icon when I was growing up. In fact much of my hetero sex was had while a song of his was playing in the background. Barry and Goldine..your thoughts are in my prayers..

tHanks for the correction gOdIVa. tHose raPPers just lOve to gET shot, doN't they. Didn't TUPpac's sales sOAR after he was KILled? They sing about guns, ho's and violence, they are anti-gay, and also unintelligible. Thankfully.

Lucky i'm shocked.......

As far as i know not being a huge rap fan but Run DMC weren't the ho's/bitches type of group especially as Run is now the Rev Run an ordained minister and they were one of the first rap groups to come out and say that they weren't from the 'hood just three middle class black guys from a middle class neighborhood.

Sometimes even the good guys go down ..........

Rush is right, Lucky. Run-DMC spoke out against violence and they were the only rappers at Live Aid. Old school rap was not about guns & ho's; often, it was anti-drug (Grandmaster Flash's White Lines) & anti-violence, or just about having a good time. It was not misogynistic as it is now. Rapper's Delight was homophobic, though; I always hated that line about Superman being a "fairy...in pantyhose." x(

RushNY not sure if Run is a "Rev." I was under the impression that Darryl McDaniels is the one ... as I mentioned I'm not sure :( .

I do know that Run is Russell Simmons, brother Joseph :) . In the early eighties Russell Simmons with then classmate Rick Ruben started Def Jam Records. I believe LL Cool J (Ladies Love Cool James) was one of the first artists to record for the upstart.

Run DMC recorded for his Russell's label. Rick eventaully left and created Def American Records which became American Records about 8 years ago. Rick is a brilliant producer. Russell is an amazing businessman who is responsible for bringing most of the Rap / Hip Hop culture to the middle class white boys.

And as RushNY remarked, Lucky, Run DMC really was not into the gang warfare that so many rappers seem to be part of.

I think i am right about the Rev Run , also there wouldn't be a hip-hop culture without middle class white boys who do you think buys all those CD's and Tommy Hilfiger/FUBU/Phat Farm/Sean John merchandise .....:-)

P.S-Walk This Way was a GREAT record though originally and the Run DMC version it certainly kick started Aerosmiths career again ,at the time it came out they couldn't get arrested.

Still I don't think anyone deserves to be shot ..

I give them a lot of credit for taking the road less travelled

Sensationalism is a part of mainstream culture..you have to shock to get noticed..

But if you "Listen Without Prejudice" to some of rap music you will find that many of these artist are lyrical geniuses.

G. Are you replying to my post #3? I haven't commented on Jam Master Jay's death. I was only noting who wrote Walk This Way.

Jonathan Harris aka Dr.Smith Dies

Danger Will Robinson........

Yes...I was and still am a huge "Lost in Space" fan...Dr. Smith was a funny character and in fact helped me increase my vocabulary with some of the words he used during his exchanges with the robot. I will miss him..He died on Sunday at the young age of 87 from a blood clot.

Don...the boyfriend of Wills sister was my first T.V. crush...I wonder where he is now :*
