News coverage of the Iowa caucus this past weekend included quite a bit of coverage of the Iowa State Fair, including the newest entry in fair food: deep fried butter. Or butter on a stick.

Here, an embedded reporter tries it.

After watching the video, I feel MY cholesterol level shooting up!

The first I heard of it was at last year's San Diego County Fair. Yes, deep-fried butter in Southern California. Eeew

The worst I heard about from the Ventura County Fair was deep fried PB&J. I'm not that fond of the stuff without the batter and grease.

Thanks a lot for the video Deej. I first heard about deep fried butter a couple of years ago. I don't know if it was first, but I think it was in connection with the Minnesota State Fair, so I guess it's spreading.

Can someone spare a simvastatin?

You know, the TRULY intrepid would insist that the butter be hyper-super-frozen before it is fried, so that it is still in a "refrigerated" form when it is eaten.

Kinda like Homer Simpson's special waffles wrapped around a stick of butter.

Reminds me of a scene from the TV series Weeds last year in which Silas & Andy enter a butter-sculpture contest at a state fair to earn some cash - and discover that its really an eating contest: the goal is to consume life-size busts of famous people carved from butter! Stomach-churning! ;)

Well the butter shouldn't be so disturbing, and I doubt it is the most unhealthy part of that meal.

The enormous soda pop may well be the most unhealthy component of that meal.

Then also the breading is white flour with a ton of sugar and still drizzled with "frosting" which is more sugar with some hydrogenated oil. Plus my guess is that the butter is cut with some other unhealthy margarine like substance.

Raul,

Hope these foods are not Chicago style eating at "trendy" restaurants. I'd rather stay in and have something that's GOOD for you.

Luckily the not-so-new trend for healthy, seasonal, locally sourced and sustainable foods is still going strong.

Part of the whole farm to table movement.

I'm lucky to have several such restaurants, markets and a decent weekly farmers market within walking distance of my place.

That plus my herb and vegetable garden ensures I eat healthy food everyday even if I do live in the "inner city".
