Hello guys,

I've just watched very nice Russian movie about the WWII and would like to share with you. It's about the volunteers from the prisons and used the prisoners as shock troops.

Greatly recommend you - Penalty Battalion 2004 (Strafbat - original title). Here is the trailer and release info http://moviezdb.blogspot.com/2011/07/strafbat-2004-aka-penalty-battalion.html

Haven't watched a lot of Russian movies but this one got impress me. If you know any good to see moves, please don't hesitate to mention them.

Crazy Stupid Love is not a great movie but i can't get enough of Ryan Gosling.

I saw this a few months ago in the free portion of on-demand and liked it a lot:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051429/

Bonjour Tristesse. Stars David Niven as pleasure-loving playboy dad whose daughter shares his carefree attitude toward life. Trouble ensues when daddy becomes engaged to a lady with a more dour and stricter viewpoint of how life should be lived and young women should behave.

Isn't The Return fantastic? Loved it.

This Russian movie is very very very good.

And this movie is an absolute masterwork.

http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Russian_Ark/60024989?trkid=2361637

Between those two, same filmmakers, I would start with Father and Son because it's much more narrative and ridiculously homoerotic. If you like FandSon, give Russian Ark a try. Enjoy.

Certainly not a Russian movie, but I saw THE HELP this afternoon and loved it. Being from Mississippi

this movie really shows what the state was like back in the 50's. The black lady who played the black

lead should get an Oscar nomination.

I'm looking forward to seeing "The Help" this weekend. I enjoyed the book as a light weekend read, hopefully it will be a light weekend movie. Recently I saw another movie about 1920's Memphis called "The Loss of A Teardrop Diamond." It was on the Sundance channel last month, and is supposedly based on a lost screenplay by Tennessee Williams. It's about a "flapper" that went to college and is trying to reestablish her role in society as a debutante with little success. Ann-Margaret plays the rich "old" aunt, and Ellen Burstyn plays another "old" character. Bryce Dallas Howard is the "girl," and is Ron Howard's daughter. All of this makes me feel quite dated. Captain America, Chris Evans, is the "boy." I watched the whole movie without using "pause" or "fast forward," my highest recommendation for it's entertainment factor.

Antoan, thank you for starting this thread.

For me a good movie would be "A single man" by Tom Ford. I think every gay man should see this movie at least once in his life. Very powerful.

While we're on the subject of movies let me suggest a few favorites from last year.

1) Four Lions - one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. (Great Britain)

2) Waste Land - a great documentary (American/Brazil)

3) Mother - seems cliched but then... (South Korea)

4) Exit Through The Gift Shop - a real hoot and a giant put on. Is it even a documentary? (Great Britain/American)

Both Waste Land and Exit had nominations as best documentary.

So far this year:

1) Buck

2) Passione

3) Tuesday, After Christmas.

WARNING: Tuesday is from the Romanian minimalist super realism school. A lot of people think it's like watching paint dry

and nothing happens. It's all about character and the interactions between people. Nothing phony, no obvious

manipulation.

Thank you for starting this thread! I'm a stay-at-home movie buff,

and love Russian cinema. There was an excellent movie about a young

Russian WW2 soldier returning home to see his mother. It was magnificent.

It didn't hurt that the soldier was a blonde hunk and great actor. I'm

blocking the name, but if I can find it, I'll post. You'd probably love it.

Best,

Oh I hated HATED A Single Man. It's like the a-hole never even read the book. I understand about reshaping another's story and making it your own movie, but you've got to maintain some of the original's integrity. Yuck.

Also check out "Big Bad Love", "Water", Kings of Leon" and just for no thinking fun entertainment see "Nic and Tristan Go To Mega Dega"

Rod Hagen, you're entitled to your own opinion and I respect it. All my friends A-D-O-R-E-D the movie.

I found the person you called "asshole" pretty talented and his achievement recommendable.

Some Recent Favorites

I recently saw "The Beginner" with Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor - Some lovely laughs

and sweet story that was amazingly well acted.

Also saw the latest most unWoodyAllen likeWoodey Allen movie in years (Even more so than Match Point). The film

is called "Paris at Midnight" with Owen Wilson. You need an average to above average knowledge of famous artists

to get many of the jokes and some of the context.

Wonderful film!

WOW, as a kid just a few years younger than him, Christian Bale gave me LOTS to masturbate to. I probably saw Empire of The Sun 20 times as a preteen. I knew it wasn't him singing, but it was in my fantasies.

I'm not enough of a musician to understand the technical tricks they used for that song, but the vocals have haunted me ever since I first saw the movie. Agreed, WOW. And thanks for the memory, Rod. I tear up every time I hear it.
