That is the number who will win the lottery.

seeker, demand is so high for marriage licenses in NYC they've instituted a lottery for people wanting to be married (in civil ceremoneies) so that they won't wind up in the painful position of turning people away because there's nobody available to marry them.

The only limit on private ceremonies will be availability of facilities and people to do the deed.

Thanks for the explanation, deej. For those of us who don't live in NY and haven't been following this on a daily basis, , some additional context in the orginal post would have been helpful ;) This isn't the first 'Day 1'.

Only helpful if you got a partner and are on the cusp of marrying. Otherwise, I think it is now becoming overplayed... I get it,

us Gays are happy we can marry. Next !

"Us gays" can only marry in a handful of states and still don't get those 1100+ federal benefits, so that's what's "next." Also, this does affect people who don't have a partner & don't plan to get married soon. Equality affects us all. Think of the gay kids who now have one more reason not to think they're different or bad or that there's something wrong with being gay. Equality is huge.

Agreed, this is a big deal and should not be taken lightly.

Yeah, that "equality" crap is way overrated. Much better to live a closeted life in the shadows.

Really? This lackadaisical attitude infuriates me. It IS important that gay marriage has moved forward in NY. It IS important that we as homosexuals are one step closer to legal "normality." If it doesn't apply to you in your life right now, fine, but don't belittle the progress made or those who revel in it.

The 764 number is across all of the boroughs: 400 for Manhattan (where all the spots are filled, one presumes with all the Madison Ave advertising types hoping to tie the knots) and 112 spots each in Brooklyn and Queens (where there were spots available for those dykes who don't need the fabulousness of Manhattan, no true queer considering Brooklyn for their wedding ;-) There were also 98 spots in the Bronx and 42 in Staten Island which had room -- their quotas being unfilled.

People just aren't chomping at the bit on this, or are holding back for a spring wedding.

Right. Manhattan was the reason for the lottery in the first place. All who signed up were accepted, but only by moving Manhattan's excess to other boroughs. It remains to be seen whether those couples will accept "going somewhere else" to get married, or postpone.

Sunday is expected to be the busiest day in the history of the City Clerk's office.
