I think the thing I hate most about politics is the oh so blatant hypocrisy to be found in both political parties.

Democrats complained about Republicans calling President Clinton "Slick Willie". Republicans complain about calling President Bush "Dubya" or "Shrub". Both sides said we should respect the office if not the man.

Republicans complained that Clinton used Kosovo and Bosnia to draw attention away from his domestic problems. Democrats complain that Bush is using Iraq to draw attention away from the economy.

Last week, Toricelli pulled out of the NJ Seante race and was replaced by a much more popular candidate. Republicans said it was unfair. Democrats said voters should have a choice.

This week, Taylor pulls out of the Montana Senate race and the Republicans are contemplating replacing him with the popular Montana governor. Democrats say this is unfair. Repulicans say the voters should have a choice.

Does the madness ever end?

But every once in a while, someone will do something noble and important. Eisenhower warned about the power of the military industrial complex just before he left office. Kennedy inspired the country with his youthful charism and handling of the Cuban missile crisis. Johnson got Congress to pass land mark legislation in the areas of civil rights, medicare and Head Start. Ford healed a lot of pain after Vietnam and Watergate. Even Bush, for whom I have little respect, rallied the country after 9/11/01. We are talking about human beings who are always calculating how to hold on to power, a very strong drug.

Taylor in Montana apparently claimed that the Democrats were trying to "smear" him as homosexual because of his youthful business adventures in male hair replacement. Now there's an interesting subtext!

I just got back after spending a week in Montana. Listened to all the radio ads and saw a couple TV ads.

1) Mike Taylor ran a beauty school in the '80s and had a problem with the Feds over misuse of federal student loans. He paid a fine and was not prosecuted.

2) Not once did I hear the Republicans in Montana say that they wanted to replace Taylor in the race. Montana law prohibits candidates from being replaced less than 84 days prior to the election. Technically, Taylor is still in the race, but is not campaigning.

3) I nearly slammed into a huge elk on Hwy 191. Ran off the raod to miss it. When I looked back, the smartass was just standing there looking at me. This bull elk had an 11-point rack; 6 on the left and 5 on the right. Good thing I didn't have my rifle with me. I'd probably be in jail right now.

4) First snow fell today in Butte. Just some flurries, though.

5) According to the reviews this week, there's an escort in Spokane now. Will wonders never cease? :-)
