Thanks, Deej. I've had a quick look and plan to install it today. I had heard of dropbox as an online storage option but hadn't realized that there was associated software with back-up & synching capabilities.

People who know more and are more paranoid about security than I am use them, so I figure I may as well give in.

Sorry this thread got moved

I don't think it really was for 'techno nerds', although a few responses may have approached that, and I don't think it would have gotten much exposure or responses if I had posted it here originally. And the number of sticky threads here almost forces it out of sight.

I hope I'm wrong, but I myself don't generally look here, and I think this thread had some value.

I almost hate to ask this, because after reading earlier posts, it sounds so amateurish, but what are your opinions of Windows Security Essentials and Windows Defender? I use Windows 7.

microsoft guarding microsoft

I guess they might be "average" coverage or slightly below (depending on who or where you look)

I guess they're okay because they're made BY Microsoft but personally I get a little freaked out using "Microsoft" programs to guard "Microsoft" software. IMO it's always good to have an alternate that doesn't abide by the Microsoft rules

I pay less than $60 / year for Carbonite. Hard drives fail (including backup drives). While I still have an on-site hard drive backup, I feel better knowing I also have an off-site copy with Carbonite.

For what it's worth, I agree with you.

People I respect have good opinions of Windows Defender and the rest of Microsoft's offerings, and the price is certainly right, HOWEVER don't confuse their virus protection with the spyware tools being discussed in this thread. They are different things. If you're going to be surfing the net, going to porn sites that you've never heard of before, or otherwise visiting places you've not known before, you really do need both.

Thanks, Deej. But . . .
