I already went to Bob's Tax Barn/Hair Salon/Laundry Service and got my taxes filled out and sent in. Did anybody else get there's done yet?

Ughhh....Tax season comes in two phases for me. Phase 1 is January, where I work with my accountant to issue 1099s to individuals I paid for miscellaneous work. As a side note, all of you escorts who received in excess of 600 from me should have already received your 1099 in the mail. Please let me know if you didn't get the form. ;)

Then, I usually take a month to breathe, and in early March, I turn my attention to my personal taxes. I usually file mid/late March, and never push the deadline. My goal is that my estimated taxes paid during the year will leave me owing just a little more at tax filing. I never plan to overpay. The government will never get a tax free loan from me!

Went to my accountant yesterday. According to them, the IRS is still working on forms and they can't file my taxes electronically until the IRS finishes their updates. :(

They estimate I won't have to pay (barely) on my federal return and will probably break even on the state.

yea...i actually used turbotax online as well

Fidelity won't have my 1099s (DIV and INT) available for import until 2/15, but I've completed the self-employed income and rental income sections already. God it's fun getting lost in the minutia of amortizing the depreciation of rent-producing assets.

By the way, you can save 25% on Turbo Tax if you go there through the Fidelity website. You don't have to have a relationship with Fidelity* in order to get the discount. http://personal.fidelity.com/planning/tax/do_your_taxes.shtml.cvsr?oad=tax002

* not to be confused with a monogamous relationship

You forgot October 15. The extended deadline for submitting your SEP contribution. I don't know about you but I can't stand to write the tax due and the SEP check at the same time so I always file the extension.

Amen brother. But usually the "little more" ends up being a lot more.

You know when I said "Bob's Tax Barn/Hair Salon/Laundry Service" it was my attempt at humor...not sure if anybody caught that or not or if it was really that bad of a joke.

Soon after the Christmas tree is hauled away,

Greatness sits down to prepare his taxes.

That's gonna be one of the toughest tax seasons with income from overseas, investment property income, income for two businesses, international wire transfers, 1099-MISC, stock investments...etc. I am not jealous of my CPA that's for sure! ;) Will do it as soon as I get back to the States (end of March).

God love New York.

There's the high state income tax. Then the city taxes your income separately. Then the city levies an additional tax on unincorporated businesses and sole proprietors (like me) earning within NYC. Not to be left out, the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District also taxes self-employment income. (I kid you not.)

You'd almost think the state, city and metro district wouldn't need to tax sales, but you'd be wrong to the tune of 8.875 percent.

Of course there's also property tax, but other than state "use taxes" due on my out-of-state purchases, I think that covers all that apply to me.

And if I recall correctly, NY's personal exemption is a big fat zero?

As a sole proprietor, don't you have to pay personal property tax? Or at least pay a flat fee for the privilege of telling them you're exempt form personal property tax? (that one really irritates me).

Great to be a small business owner, isn't it?

What about small businesses form a union and hire lobbyists to make the tax system more favorable to them? Big cooperations do it all the time. Do you think it's possible?
