How much time/effort do you spend on anti-aging? When did you start, and if you care to say, how old are you now? Have you seen the benefits?

My question pertains to treatments or products that fight superficial aging, especially on the face. (Let's exclude the gym for now.) Examples include topical creams--Rx or not, Botox, fillers and even cosmetic surgery. I'm wondering whether gay- and bi-men spend as much time and money on this stuff as women do.

As for me, I've found that generic Retin A works better than any $$$ cream I've found, though I use a moisturizer when my skin gets flaky. I'm often in a natural light-less environment during the day, but when I'm not, I use a medium-priced stable sunscreen. (Unfortunately, most U.S. sunscreens can be broken down by sunlight, rendering them worthless within a few minutes.) I also do some light laser stuff to keep my skin from looking too red, and occasional preventative Botox. I'm in my mid-30s and started doing most of this at age 30.

Results? In general, people assume I'm in my early to mid 20s though that's true of a lot of people my age now that people are staying out of the sun. While staying at my parents place, a repairmen told my mom that she needed to show me how something worked "in case she [i.e. I] comes home from school one day and you're not here." (And he saw me up close.) I've had a number of other episodes like this too: People often say to my sibling: "I didn't know you had a little sister." In fact, she's 7 years younger than I am."

So to me, it's worth the cost.

I had a massage client that was a dermatologist. when I decided to quit tanning he gave me a free tca peel which is a deep peel to remove any sun spots and fine lines from the face. I have a small bottle of the product left to do another treatment in the future. it is a pretty deep peel and you look like a burn victim for a week but well worth it.

other than that all i every do is a daily face wash and moisturizer. then a once a week scrub. never smoked a cigarette never drinked alcohol and I no longer tan. will be 43 on tuesday

Great that it worked for you. A relative had the same kind of peel you did and was very happy with it. I had a much lighter a few years ago that didn't do much.

I rarely drink--and when I do, it's 1/4 of a glass of wine--and have never smoked for what that's worth.

Re tanning, I was on the swim team for a few summers as a kid and tanned then. :( Luckily, I haven't done any of that since.

Wow!! I'm in my mid 40's and really haven't thought about spending any money on anti-aging yet. Maybe I should. I always thought a good diet, exercise, staying out of the sun, no smoking, and very little drinking will all help to fight cosmetic aging. Right now I can't even think of a Botox injection or something along those lines...who knows..maybe one day soon I'll change my mind and do some of that stuff. It's not like I frown upon people who do. I say if it makes you feel good, DO IT!!!

I’m seventy and never having been gorgeous an aging appearance has never been a major problem for me. For years, because of hair loss, I wore a comb over until one day the whole damn thing began to seem silly. That day I went to Super Cuts and had the girl clip what hair I did have as short as possible. I then went home and shaved off the stubble. The smartest thing I ever did. Later this month I’m having both eye lids lifted but that is because they have become a vision problem rather than an appearance problem.

Men have the advantage of looking distingushed with gray hair and even wrinkles. Good luck on the surgery!

Good for you, dude! Far too damn many people would avoid that surgery ONLY because they associate it either with vanity or aging. It takes balls to say "no, I actually need this" -- sad, but true.

Obvious joke: we'd throw you a surprise party but how would we tell?

(Good luck!)

Good luck with the surgery, but be sure to check which day you're scheduled. I think the Dr. offers a free pair of Carol Channing eyelashes with each lid-lift on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I don't want you to be surprised when you look into the mirror.;)

Seriously....good luck.

I've had a few Procedures over the Year's before they became very Popular and now no big deal! The main thing is check out "Who is going to do What" very carefully!

The "Eyelids" can be tricky as we have seen on some Old Stars of Stage & Screen! Most of these Procedures do have a certain amount of Major Discomfort associated with them! One day we all "Pay the Piper" But IF you decide to until then "Paying the P/S" ain't such a Bad thing....

I'm mid 40s now, and very much look the part too! I'm definitely not aging gracefully. HA! But I don't care. Beyond basic cleanliness, body wash, and moisturizer for my deteriorating skin, I spend nothing to hold back the effects of time. Like Epigonos (well wishes to you friend!), I would only do so if the treatment or procedure would improve a medical/health problem. Since I am self-insured (uninsured), I do manage my healthcare more like a customer than a patient.

just a little confused here....are you a man or woman??!!......

mid-40s here....have not had any paid procedures...I don't do a lot....some basic, cheap moisturizer before bed....I don't sit out in the sun much anymore....living in a very dry, sunny area won't help, but I like it here....periodic articles always seem to conclude that staying out of the sun is by far the best thing you can do to preserve your skin....those expensive lotions and potions from the fancy cosmetic counter are major rip-offs!!!!!.....genetics has much to do with it, too, of course.....

But be sure to add Vitamin D to your regimen...

yeah, good point....is it true that 20 minutes in the sun gives you your daily does of it?????...or not?.....I do take a basic multi-vitamin, too.....and I hike/backpack a lot....I just don't sit out in the sun much anymore to get a tan

I hike around LA with exposed arms, legs (the longest two) and wearing a baseball cap. My physician ran a blood test and suggested I take 2000 IU of Vitamin D per day. I'd get a bloodtest to be sure.

I was told 15 minutes in the sun gives you the daily dose of vitamin d. I was also told by a physician if you only take 1 vitamin that it should be vitamin D that its the number one vitamin that the average person lacks enough of.

That's the oddest observation of 2011 I've heard of in this new year. Granted, it's still early in the year, but still.

If someone ran the numbers, I'm sure that the over-whelming reason people have this specific surgery is for the very reasons you suggest they don't. That being aging and vanity.

Granted, this condition becomes one of concern for vision in aging and elderly people - But I suspect the reason, if there is a reason, that this segment of our population doesn't elect this surgery has little to do with vanity. Your aging suggestion, answers itself when one is 70 years old.

Good lord, Dutchess, he's trying to keep his eyes open and vision un-obscured - not make things worse! :)
