What an honor this must have been for the Fratelli Pellgrini "Pilgrim Brothers" to have been selected by the Vatican to perform for the Pope. This acrobatic team has performed across the world and their performance was part of an international congress for the pastoral care of circus and traveling show people organized by the Vatican to bring attention to the problems confronting migrants. Hopefully this kind gesture on the part of the Vatican will bring attention to the plight of the migrants.

There's no real reason to believe that they're statistically different from other gay men, who are overwhelmingly attracted to adults. The men in the video seem to be in their 20s, which many around here consider ideal.

Of course, when a priest--who is considered a holy person and in a position of power--abuses a child, he gets a lot more press than a lay person who does the same. That's especially true because of the conspiracy to keep the whole thing quiet. That's why we hear more about pedophile priests than say pedophile businessmen.

I wouldn't say no reason. The prohibition on priests marrying probably makes the priesthood attractive to men who need a cover for people asking why they aren't married. It's easy to see why the priesthood would be a very attractive profession for a pedophile. The priest has guaranteed time alone with children, and no one will ask him "Why aren't you married?" (and no wife to be snooping around). In fact, if a man had a healthy physical attraction to women, one would assume that the prohibition on priests marrying would be a very strong dis-incentive for entering the priesthood.

Yes, I can see what you mean about the selection effect. But it takes a lot of rigorous work to become a priest, and much more to become a Vatican level official. If you're just trying to get into a position where you can be with kids, its probably makes more sense to do part time softball coaching or something.

 

Moreover, the Vatican guys probably have less contact with kids than the average parish priest. So the guys sitting next to the pope are probably less likely to be pedophiles than your average parish priest.

And there in lies the conundrum. The Vow of Celebacy is a vow not to marry. The Vow of Chastity is a vow to refrain from sex. The priesthood may be a place to hide from the bonds of marriage, but there is no prohibition against having sex. d

I don't mean that less access means lower likelihood of being a pedophile. I mean that pedophiles who chose the profession for that reason are less likely to make the effort needed to climb the church hierarchy when such efforts would result in less access to children.
