What a wonderful song~~~~ To my loving Hoville members

My heart opens to your voice

Like the flowers open

to the kisses of the dawn!

But, oh my beloved,

to better dry my tears,

Let your voice speak again!

Tell me that you are returning

to Delilah forever!

Repeat to my tenderness

the promises of old times,

those promises that I loved!

Ah! respond to my tenderness!

Fill me with ecstasy!

Like one sees the blades

of wheat that wave

in the light wind,

So trembles my heart,

Ready to be consoled,

by your voice that is so dear to me!

The arrow is less rapid

in bringing death,

than is your lover

to fly into your arms!

Ah! respond to my tenderness!

Fill me with ecstasy!

It's a beautiful song. I really love it. Somehow it tells a little bit of my current self. Kisses and hugs~~~

One of my all-time favorite pieces. Although I'm more of a big mezzo voice singing it. I loved the performance of Jackie (aka Marilyn Horne) on youtube at the Met anniversary performance. And at the end her embrace of Rise Stevens (the greatest Delilah of her generation) was so touching.

The recently departed Shirley Verrett was another magnificent performer of this role. Here with Jon Vickers. I almost automatically hear the Samson part in the 2nd chorus -- it takes a magnificent piece of music and makes it so sensual as to almost be unbearable.

Another great was Elena Obratzsova. Today we have lost the big-assed mezzo voice that I so dearly love.

I'm with you Leigh. When I first heard this aria, I damn near turned straight. But then I encountered

and I quickly returned to "normal".

Greatness, I must thank you for this post, not for the particular link, but for making me aware for the first time that all this musical material is available on YouTube, of which I was totally unaware (all right, I'll admit that I still live in the 20th century technologically). After listening to Callas, I clicked on one video after another to hear other divas sing the same aria, and today I will go back and explore further.

The ironic thing about this beautiful aria is that it is totally insincere: it is sung by a villainess who is attempting to seduce the hero in order to emasculate him.
