It's always 'on the verge,' but I wouldn't hold your breath. HIV is the trickiest disease out there and friends of mine who are researchers say that we're a long way from a true cure or vaccination. The complication is so much that it's the main reason why Bill Gates pulled most of his Gates Foundation money from eradicating AIDS to figuring out cancer and diabetes.

There is a difference between a cure, ridding the body of the virus once you get it and effective elimination of a virally mediated disease, such as small pox. Effective vaccines for diseases such as polio, small pox, measles, mumps etc have put these viral illnesses in the category of diseases rarely found in the industrialized world except for smallpox which has been eradicated except for the vials of the virus kept in the US and Russia.
