Lots of cultures around the world use various squashes in sweet dishes including here in the U.S. Don't forget that pumpkins are squash. Heck even zuchini is made into sweet breads and pretty much every other kind of squash is sometimes served with brown sugar and butter.

 

Anyway I don't know the name of the squash I used, it just looked pretty and I thought it would make a pretty serving dish for the ice cream.

 

Below is a picture of one and for scale in the background are the first 5 volumes of Will Durant's "The Story of Civilization". It is not a very large squash, it barely reaches the Reformation.
