Unsettleing, yet captivating

Putting aside the usual critique and comments which you might expect from people like Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and the like, which would probably be valid commentary on this boys vocal talents; This performance just settled on the side of uneasy and creepy for me.

I found it more like an out of drag, drag type performance than anything else. Had I not had the visual, I think I would have enjoyed it more, as the kid can really sing and certainly has pipes, but for me, hearing Whitney Houston, sounding better than she probably has in years, coming out of the mouth of this young Chinese boy was just very odd. Perhaps even just a bit disturbing for me.

I'm just hoping that Dolly Parton isn't next on his performance song list. If so, we could just have the making of the youngest female impersonator on the planet.

Just how creepy would that be?

It sounded like a bad Whitney impersonation to me. Granted

it's most likely a better "Whitney" than Whitney can do today,

but nothing really impressive.

Why is America obscessed with ugly people who happen to

have a 1/2 descent voice?...I don't get it.

Plenty of 1/2 as ugly people in the word can sing better...

but we ignore them...not homely enough...go figure.

He's 23!

Even creepier: although he looks like a boy, various news agencies report he's actually a 23-year-old man.

Not creepy, East Asian

[/url]

The physical cues Americans use to judge age just don't work all that well with most East Asian young adults.

He's got a good voice, but not extraordinary--sure not spectacular like Susan Boyle. I agree the whole performance (looking like a boy, but sounding like Whitney) seems very odd. And get him some fruit for his bowl! He totally need's a haircut.

Chinese talent...

I'm not sure if this Chinese reality show is similar to American Idol or America's Got Talent, however, Lin Yu Chun has a good chance of winning the 1st prize of $1,000,000. Not bad for a Whitney Houston sound alike.

I know

He is good. I love Chinese men too. They are so cute. :)

He's amazing. Wow, I was not expecting that at all. It’s always cool when someone reminds us that first impressions aren’t always accurate.

greatness, thank you for referring to this 23 year old as a man. Because Asians tend to look young, they get referred to as a boy too often, even though I realize that no harm is meant by it. But, having known several Asians, they prefer to be called a man when they become of age.

BTW, why are you not sending us reports of your trip to Asia?

welcome

I haven't left yet. Postponed until June or so and I am not going there for pleasure so I don't think there is anything exciting about it. I appreciate your enthusiasm though. :)

Good Stuff

Ohhh Snap! He's got a great, distinctive voice--especially for a man. Susan Boyle just found her soul mate! Perhaps Simon Cowell should pair these two up for a duet. It would either be an epic hit or a train wreck, but I'm not sure which.:)

A Brief Sensation on TV in Taiwan

by DAVE ITZKOFF Published: April 12, 2010

So much for the next Susan Boyle. A week after his pitch-perfect rendition of “I Will Always Love You” made him an online sensation, Lin Yu-chun, above, a 24-year-old contestant on the “One Million Star” show, a Taiwanese talent competition, was voted off the program, Agence France-Presse reported. Video of Mr. Lin, a shop worker who has been nicknamed Little Fatty, singing that Whitney Houston-by-way-of-Dolly Parton love ballad, was widely circulated on the Internet and was viewed more than four million times on YouTube. But those numbers apparently meant nothing to the show’s viewers and judges, who criticized Mr. Lin’s performance of a Mandarin song on the next week’s broadcast. (“You rarely hit a wrong note,” one judge said. “But you did today. What’s wrong with you?”) Stella Teng, an agent for Mr. Lin, told Agence France-Presse: “Despite the failure he still keeps a positive attitude. He feels that success cannot possibly come without failure.” Ms. Teng said that Mr. Lin would be invited back on “One Million Star” as a guest performer next week, and may give interviews or concerts in other territories, including the United States.
