In august of this year I moved into a basement apt. because I travel quite a bit I have not really been aware of a problem but now that I have been home for 2 days I am having what seems like allergies scratchy throat, stuffy nose & a little bit of body aches. This seems to happen every time I come back from a trip and spend time relaxing at home.

I cant imagine a cold coming on without some sort of warning

This has been a pattern i leave for a trip I come back and boom I am down with what seems like strep throat I am going to high tail it to Phoenix for a few days ASAP. and will be at the ER in a few hours to be sure its not something serious

Has anyone had any experiences with mold in the home or what the symtoms were like.

I have goggled this to death seems like it would take a few days at least to start affecting me but this basically happens overnight.

UGH !!!!!!!

sounds like exactly what happens to me if I am put in a damp/mold/midrew situation -- having grown in in CA (bay area) now living in CT -- it took me forever to get used to all the different stuff on this coast --

sounds like you might want to find a new pad -- I am sure there are MANY who will offer david!! :-)

all the best!

Allergic reactions can be immediate. During the Christmas season, I've had to leave parties as soon as I arrive because of live Xmas trees that I react to as soon as I come through the door.

Since you're in a basement, one good start would be a dehumidifier. That's often enough to inhibit a mold problem.

Good luck!

David, I've been down for the count since getting back from Palm Springs with the same symptoms.

Like Daddy, I have been fatigued, a little stuffy, and had body aches for the last couple of days. I was not at the Hooville weekend, but still have those symptoms. That said, I've experienced in my home what you are experiencing in yours. When I bought some new furniture, my allergies went into overdrive when I stepped into the house. When I left the house, I was fine within an hour or so. Same thing when I switched cat litter brands. You might want to check the San Francisco tenants rights ordinance and see if you can break your lease due to mold or other allergens in your home.

Sure sounds like allergies. I strongly recommend seeing an MD allergist for skin testing; this will document exactly what you are

allergic to and thus what to avoid but also will be useful in negotiating with your landlord. Good luck.

I get these symptoms soon after I enter a house with a cat. A large percentage of the people appear to be allergic to cats. An allergist can give you tests to find out what is the problem.

Hmmmmm.....Sorry to hear my friends are suffering. I have been feeling fine since returning to Atlanta from Palm Springs. It must have been the prescribed supplement of iron (or should I say Irons) I took while traveling. One dose of AJ, three times daily.

No David it doesn't take days mere hours and a mold allergy can have you feeling like that. If Claritin or zyrtec have you feeling a little better that a good sign its allergy related. They don't do anything for a viral related symptom. So give one a try and it should be an easy test. You wont feel 100% better but it it lightens you have a clue.

well that was easy

Thanks Deej that's exactly what i needed

went to Bed Bath & beyond bought a big 45 pint dehumidifier put it under the porch stairwell which is at the head of my bed in about 2 hours I am already feeling a hell of a lot better.

I can breath and the congestion is gone I cant believe how fast that works :) scratchy throat is gone too.

thanks everyone for your input my lease is up in Aug and I really should find a new den of iniquity. Any one got an apartment to rent that you dont mind a little shaken going on :p

Ask the landlord if there have been any mold problems. If possible talk to the old tenant. There might have been a water leak, flood in some part of the house, etc. Some people don't get rid of the old carpets, wood floors, walls when problems arise. They think it will all dry out which it doesn't. Look under all sinks for possible problems. Wallpaper in bathrooms is a big culprit of mold problems.

I have found that flushing your nose with saline solution works really well coupled with allergy medication though you are correct, it does take a little time to fully kick in but the solution works pretty quick.

My ENT had me start the saline flush a couple years ago. I can't believe the difference it has made for me, especially during pollen season. I've tried a couple different products, but I find the Naseline product the easiest to use.

Daddy just so you know I didn't kiss you! I think it is the time of year and all the blooming plants!

Good timing...

...I moved into a basement apt...I am having what seems like allergies...
Well this thread was very timely for me. With all the rain that we recently had in the northeast I had a bit of a water problem in my basement... a consequence of which has been a problem with allergies... which is something that only rarely bothers me significantly. I am in the process of drying things out and hopefully that will solve the problem...
