Harry Markopolos unsuccessfully tried for almost a decade to alert SEC and government agencies of Bernie's Ponzi Scheme. Still nothing has been done for SEC and other responsible agencies. However, when Goldman Sachs asked for an investigation of their employee to FBI, it took no more than a day. Maybe Harry should have contacted FBI in the first place. ;)

Harry wrote about his ordeal in his new book No One Would Listen. I am currently reading the book. I read some reviews on Amazon (No Lucky I didn't buy the book from Amazon :)) and they were mostly positive. I've noticed there are some people complaining how expensive the Kindle version is. One of the reviewers used the word "greed" against the publishers. I think that's funny.

I bet China and other foreign forces will certainly notice the vulnerability and incompetence of these agencies and use them to their advantage. I think it's embarrassing for the US. How did the US come to this? I am really worry about the current situation. It's like a ticking silent time bomb and no one seem to know how serious the problem is. Obama and Congress really should do something about it. He should bring people responsible to justice and reform these organizations. Otherwise we are going to have another major economic crisis again. I hope people listen.

This is a problem inherent in all bureaucracies. They are people. As such they are self serving, greedy, and lazy. Their primary concern is always, how to make more money and do less work. Being government workers the only ways to make more money and do less work is to move up the ladder and to beg the legislature for a bigger budget and more underlings. They soon learn the universal ideology of government workers everywhere: "we can't go a better job because out department is understaffed and underfunded." It is not a fact, it is a mind set. It insulates them from criticism and responsibility. "not our fault, we are underfunded."

No matter how much money you throw at them, the mind set will not change.

The liberal/democrat answer is always: we need a bigger bureaucracy, more regulations, bigger budget, more government control.

Bigger government cannot be the solution. It is the problem.

Hey Merlin, I agree with you. Remember this one?

The two scariest sentences in American English are:

"I'm from the government. I'm here to help!"

merlin: you make obvious self-evident points...it's no secret there's no reason for most bureaucrats to work hard...yes, some govt employees are naturally hard-working people who will do a competent job....others not so much....there just isn't any "reward" for a job well done....no "profit motive"

it's a case study for why most ambitious people stay out of politics...there's more real power and, certainly, opportunity for profit in the private sector ...(and why some people go on to fleece the public in poorly-regulated enterprises, some would say!)

Just clarifying.......

Interesting generalization, Merlin2.

It goes a long way to illuminate your outlook.

Tell me, do you see yourself that way, too?

So this book puzzles..

It lacks consistency. It is because multiple people wrote and edited the book to make the book interesting but they failed to coordinate or review what each other wrote. There are a lot of books like this one these days and it has to do with making money. It's unfortunate. Will money be the death of our society? :)

Not money. The love of money will be the death of society.

No, purplekow, self seeking, ambition, the desire to improve things for yourself and family are a given. They many be hard-wired, and evolutionary development to keep the father working for his family. Money, and love of money are merely the medium of exchange, When people bartered for animal skins or goat meat, the principles were the same.

The BIG problem is when we attempt to devise institutions, economies and laws which ignore the universality of self interest. Institutions based upon the presumed or hoped-for altruism of individuals are very likely to fail. the people who fill our beaurocracies are just as greedy, selfish, and lazy as those in the private economy. Those institutions which assume that people will be self seeking and attempt to harnass that pursuit for the common good, are more likely to succeed.

The reason socialism/communism does not work is that, in attempting to destroy self interst, it destroys incentive. Free enterprise rewards innitiative, innovation, and diligence which are a byproduct of the pursuit of self interest. People do not spend years working in their garages to develop a new product for the socialist state.

Liberals belief in ever increasing regulation is based on the naive belief that regulators, bureaucrats, are altruistic, while individuals and businesses are ruthlessly greedy. And, when their regulations fail as they inevitably do eventually, liberals naively believe that what are needed is more, ever more regulations. Liberals detest the idea that OTHER people are working for their own self interest, rather than altruistically, as OTHER people ought to do.
