Well a couple of months ago a hot young guy parked his car near my gate and walked up to me while I was in front of the garage. Since there was no reason a hot guy would give me a visit I just stared at him suspiciously. He told me that he's a marine and asked me whether I might need help with my garden. I was a bit uncomfortable because he was too hot and I couldn't figure out what his true intention was. I told him I didn't need him on that day but I might need him in the near future. He said he would stop by the following weekend. He hasn't been here ever since. Why would a marine need a job during the weekend? Is that a common thing? He said he was from Camp something..Did he lie to me? I certainly would have hired him during the summer lol. I wonder about him... Maybe he was shy or offended to come back because I looked at him suspiciously. I regret what I did.. Where did he go?

lol

I know. It still puzzles me.. :) I wonder what would have happened if I had said yes on that day.

Why does this remind me of a porn movie plotline? :D

Was he in uniform? Probably not - otherwise you would not have been able to resist and asked him for help rearranging the bedroom furniture.

Seriously though, it smells of something bad. I don't know where you live, but I don't trust anyone in situations like these. While I'm in a position to help able-bodied guys in need of these types of odd jobs (no comments from the peanut gallery please), I can't get past the thought that it's a scam of some sort and that no good will come of it. It's really a shame that I think like this, but like Mark Twain said, good judgment is the result of experience, and experience is the result of bad judgment.

It's a testament to you that this incident from a few months ago is stil on your mind. No matter what the situation was, your concern for your reaction and your thoughts about someone in need (?) are touching....Funny how isolated events like this stick in the mind....very much like the beginning of a good novel.....thanks for sharing. I can't explain why it is so compelling.

Because he's hot I guess. It was too good to be true otherwise I would have hired him right then.. I wonder why he hasn't come back.

Camp?

When it comes to Marines, the jarheads only have two camps, Camp Pendleton in San Diego CA and Camp LeJuene in North Carolina.

The Army has forts, the Air Force has Bases, the Navy has Stations and the Marines have Camps.

Marines are the toughest cuz they be always camping.

A San Diego escort one told me, emphatically, "Marines are bottoms, Sailors are tops!

It started with L so LeJuene. Interesting... but why a marine would need a second job during the weekend?? mystery

Being in a state that is heavy on military bases I've worked with & have been friends with many guys in the different branches. For way too many a second job is required because quite frankly the pay is crap. Many also are on public assistance as well.

I was in the military

When I was in the military they provided everything. I also got shrimps, lobsters and steaks during the holidays. I loved it. :)

same thing when I was in the army. Pretty much everything was provided. Not sure if its that big of a problem now but years ago when I was in the army we heard that drug use was very big in the navy.

In many areas, there aren't enough barracks available. Service members often live off-base, often in slums catering specifically to the military. If you live off-base, you also have to pay for every meal.

And they long since stopped "providing everything". We used to joke that our paychecks were nothing but uniform replacement allowances. You get an initial allotment and then it's up to you to keep the uniforms up to snuff.

A service member stationed in rural North Carolina may be able to get by on salary alone, but I'll guarantee that anyone stationed in DC or any other major city has a job on the side. More so if they're supporting a family.

Several years ago a very good friend of mine was stationed at Camp LeJeune. He was married and had two young daughters. His pay was not enough. He worked part-time at a local Pizza Hut... as did many others from the base. Could be your that your hot marine was legit. He didn't come back because he found other part-time work or perhaps was sent TDY.

Listen, better you be safe. You could be dead. It happens. Maybe it's because I'm a New Yorker, but I don't trust anyone I don't know well in my home. I even check ID for the cable guy, gas meter reader, etc.

I tend to agree that you need to be extremely careful in situations like this. It's sad but the risk is there and you shouldn't let your guard down. I guess the question would be how to keep that level of appropriate cautiousness but still be open to helping someone who may be in need and who is willing to do some honest work. Asking for an ID seems like a good idea (but those can be faked). Or maybe in addition to that you could suggest he give you his phone number so you can call him when the need arises for some work. If you see his car, then certainly make note of his license number. It seems that most of that info might only be useful after the fact in the unfortunate event of something bad happening as none of that really guarantees your safety. Probably comes down to how much risk you are willing to take, your gut feeling about the guy and situation, and if there has been problems in your area.

Other than that, not sure beyond a full blown background check what else to do to protect yourself. Just remember, your safety comes first always.

I only have old data, but back in the 90s the prevalence of military on food stamps was alarmingly high. Food stamps income requirements are (or were) 130 percent of poverty based on family size, so it's almost criminal that people serving their country and putting their lives at risk are barely above the poverty level. I think that there is a military food stamps program now that pays cash in place of food stamps, but still, it's ridiculous that a program like this is needed for the armed forces.

Thanks!

If he comes back and can show his ID then I will hire him. I want someone to be around though.

I think you're nuts. There was a case a few weeks ago and for the life of me I can't remember where it happened, I just heard one news report on the radio. It involved a young military type who got a little drunk with a gay guy, fell asleep, woke up to the gay guy groping him, and he choked him to death. I imagine his defence will be "gay panic". Don't put yourself in this position.

well

I will have someone around and I will not hire him for sex or anything so things like that will not happen. I would have given him a job, if I had bought his story. It makes sense to me now a bit. Thank you for worrying about me. :) If I am missing from here for a long time please call 911. lol..
