Being snowed in in New York today, I caught Oprah this afternoon and caught an appearance by the Canadian Tenors. I'd never heard of them but I'm in lust with the blond and wouldn't kick the brunette next to him out of bed either.

I hadn't heard of the Canadian tenors either, but I just looked them up, expecting yet another horrid slick copycat crossover group singing the same rep as all the other "tenor" concoctions - to my surprise, I found NO OPERA WHATSOEVER (my god, not even the de facto "Nessun Dorma"). Lots of ersatz arrangements of what I'd call "classical themes for people who don't really like classical music," lots of ersatz "italian quasi-arias" (see Bocelli, Groban, et al) and some gooey generic soft-pop crap. But NO OPERA.

It's just as well...;-)

(And they don't do anything for me looks-wise, either, lol.)

If you're looking for a real Canadian tenor, go with Jon Vickers. Maybe not the hottest dude on the planet (lol), but oh, that voice...;-)

Well not really, but for me Callas is always orgasmic… and in many ways as good as sex.

Probably the closest Canadian equivalent to a Callas-type would be Jon Vickers…

...and as far as the Canadian Tenors are concerned, thank the gods no opera is involved... and for the record they don't do a thing for me appearance wise...

No thank you. I'd rather go with Ben Heppner (before he began to have vocal problems).

I attended many many Jon Vickers performances at the Met in New York and I found that he had an absolutely annoying affectation of circling a note's tonality before honing in on it. Especially in English language roles like Peter Grimes, this affectation subtracted from some otherwise riveting acting and fine singing. IMHO that is.

But that blond in Canadian tenors is terminally cute even if he sang nary a note. Yum!!!

I never heard Vickers live, but I really never cared for the sound of his voice per say... but he was an intelligent singer and fine singing actor.

I did hear Heppner once and he did have a large and impressive voice.

I'll have to check out the blond again.

You know you're not musical when

circling a note's tonality before honing in on it.

you have no idea what the fuck that means. ;-)

Or even per se? ;-)

As much as I love beautiful voices, and I'll admit that Vickers' voice may not have been "beautiful," I find edgy, dramatic voices just as interesting, if not moreso - especially, as you said, if they're real singing actors.

Heppner indeed was wonderful - haven't heard him lately to my knowledge, but I know he's been having vocal trouble.

And g56whiz, indeed I'm not sure that a "note" can be said to have a "tonality." But yeah, he did sometimes have a tendency to slide into pitches. But he's far from the only singer with that symptom...;-)

Yes, or even more so! ;)

Bottom line, I like a voice with character... be it a tight vibrato, a lush plushness, the edgy, the dramatic, or whatever...

I SO agree on both statements!! ....:)

Think of it as scooping up to a note and then think of scooping into a note rapidly from all directions one after the other.

Vickers could be very mannered and tend to overwhelm everyone else on stage (that worked in Otello, not always so well in Peter Grimes), but when this dark mass lying on the floor in the dungeon in Fidelio suddenly opened its mouth, the sound gave me goosebumps.

Actually many singers can be very mannered, in various ways, and at different times in their careers... think the droopy mushy Sutherland, the jazzy Fleming, the "I don't feel like singing the words" Caballe, the at times sloppy Pavarotti, the disjointed Bartoli, etc... Some of us can tolerate these various mannerisms better than others... and still be thrilled.

That sounds like a description of at least half of the escorts we know and love on this site. :)

...the jazzy Fleming...

That's different. She's under some delusion that she can sing jazz. She doesn't come remotely close.

But give her Richard Strauss, for instance, and it's a whole other story. ;-)

Like her "jazzy" cadenza in the middle of Semiramide's "Bel raggio"... kinda outa place for Rossini. As you say she's on better behavior in Strauss...

Hey, why have you opera queens (not that I'm not one too) stolen my thread! Doesn't anyone else find this blond hot?

If by the blonde who first appears in this "video", yes, he does appear to be hot. And, yes, even though I enjoy music in all forms, I am not an opera "queen", although I might like to meet one. :)

b/t/w: my heartthrob leads off this number. The guy to his right is not bad either.

All I can say is "ew."

When Leonard Cohen sings this song, with his edgy, raw, soulful voice, it means something. When these 4 "white bread" wimpy crooners do it, it takes all the meaning out of the song and renders it soul-less and neutered. (It's also the first time I've ever heard the song where the rhymes with "halleluiah" - such as "do ya" - made me laugh - in Cohen's voice, those turns of phrase seem honest and simple, but not overtly comic - but the 4 tenors make it sound like amateurish rhyming.)

And then all Celine has to do is throw in some meaningless riffs and the place goes wild. Nothing against her, but my god, save the cheers for when she actually does something GREAT...(these days, anyone can riff like that - that's not what makes her memorable.)

Sorry...even as a gay man, I really feel that Celine Dion is hotter than all 4 of them put together...;-)
