Several years ago I was talking to this woman at work. She was wearing this amazing diamond ring which I remarked on. She told me her husband gave it to her when he proposed marriage. It was an antique ring that had belonged to his grandmother and it was quite valuable. Then she told me this story.

Her husband wanted to make his proposal really memorable. His parents owned a very nice house on the ocean. He invited her up for the weekend. He invented this story. He was going to take her for a walk along the beach at sunset and tell her that his grandmother loved to swim when she was a young bride. One day, coming out of the water she realized her ring was missing. Everyone in the family looked for it but couldn't find it. Years later when he was a young boy his grandmother told him how sad she was that she had lost the ring. She had hoped to give it to him some day so he could give it to the woman of his dreams when he met her.

Then he took the ring and buried it in the sand on the private beach near his parent's house. The next day he brought her to the house for the weekend. After they arrived, looking out the window at the beach he told her this made-up story about his grandmother's ring. She was tired from the drive and not paying much attention to what he was saying. He said "Why don't we go for a walk on the beach. Maybe we can find the ring". She said she was too tired and besides it was cold out. It was winter. He kept insisting that they go for a walk and she finally agreed.

As they were walking he started telling the story again. She was yawning and kept saying she wanted to go back to the house. He kept saying he was sure they could find the ring if they just looked around a little. The sun was setting and it was getting dark. He started moving the sand around with his feet. He couldn't find the ring. He forgot where he buried it. Then he fell to the ground and started screaming "It's got to be here somewhere"! She thought he had lost his mind and started thinking this was not the guy for her.

He started crying and throwing sand all over the place. She got really worried and thought she better run back to the house and call a doctor. Finally he found the ring and screamed "Marry me"!

She said he looked so wild, covered with with sand and mud all over his wet face she fell down laughing. He crawled over to her and put the ring on her finger. They kissed as the sun set over the ocean. They had been happily married for 10 years when she told me this story. I hope they still are.
