Streeeeeching the dollar...

"I'm even willing to forget about the four chicken thighs that I put away in the refrigerator which ended up as a Chicken Salad, and Chicken Sandwiches!"

But the goal wasn't to save food for the next day. So you didn't need 11 chicken thighs to feed three people. The money for that would have bought the 3 free-range breasts. The link I posted pointed out that it was not cheaper to buy boxed macaroni than to make it, and packaged bread crumbs are more expensive than day old bread. So, I am saying that you could have had your meal, and a healthy meal at that, for darn close to ten dollars.

Plus, you would have had the fun of cooking for your friends, who loved you even more for providing them a good , healthy meal.

Now you have to worry about all of those ingredients in the boxed macaroni that are now in your blood!!

Lucky my friend, but that's the point. An older person, can take that same $10 and make 3-4 meals out it. I suspect that I'm not the only person that is "Dollar Challenged" right now.

Not fair. You are changing the goal from fixing a meal for your friends for under $10 to a poor person trying to save food for future meals. That's a completely different goal.

Like ignoring my challenge to show us a better way to do it? Perhaps you may want to put your food where your mouth is.

I'm satisfied that I have already shown you. Boxed bread crumbs are more expensive than day old bread, canned vegetables re not cheaper than fresh, and you didn't need 11 thighs for 3 people. So, eat healthy and you will live longer, but if you want to eat the stuff listed above in boxed macaroni, have at it.

All through this thread a possibly rude question kept popping into my head, so, with apologies in advance, here goes: At Casa Lucky, prior to the blessed avent of the bf with those advanced culinary skills & excluding special events such as dinner parties and the like, how much of the everyday home cooking was done from scratch? Were peas really shelled by hand?

As Mark McGwire might say, I am not here to talk about the past!

Thanks Daddy.

Daddy,

I appreciated your posting on cooking a frugal, yet delicious, meal.

Please continue to share more of your suggestions for preparing meals on a tight budget.

Thanks,

Goodfella

Daddy good on you for creating multiple meals on just a few dollars. It is obvious that you live in the real world and not the fantasy world of country club living in gay Palm Springs. Lucky I am a checker in a grocery store. I see everyone from all walks of lives, everything from tranny's, single parents, college students, rich house wives who think they'll live it up like the common folk and play grocery shop, blue collar folk etc. From what I am getting from your quite honestly upitty post you don't need to watch your food bill unlike most of the folk that are coming through my line when I ring them up. I'm glad you can buy that unregulated cage free chicken, organic produce and can make up your own mac n cheese. But for those of us who do not have a house full of people (two or more) it is more economical to buy pre packaged items most of the time and if it is the choice of organic or make sure I have money after bills and grocery shopping I'm choosing making sure I have a few bucks left over. For many that come through my line they have lost their jobs or their hours (including mine) have been cut to just barely making it. Over the last few years I've also noticed a larger number of those who are on public assistance getting food stamps because of the reasons mentioned above. But of course you wouldn't know about that because you can't look past your own snobbery organics. I honestly wish that everyone could eat more organics but money talks esp in these times and if someone can make two or three bucks off of $10 I say good for them!

Oh yeah just to help that gagging your doing, the other night I had a Spam burger, on an un organic onion hamburger bun with non organic toppings. And you know what, it was gosh darn tasty and I'd eat another one if I had another can of Spam!

Spam

I love Spam, it's so delicious. You pan fry sliced Spam and eat it with rice. I usually eat it with steamed rice. You made me hungry. I will eat it later for dinner. :)

Good wives

I have seen good housewives feed the whole family (4 people) for less than 10 dollars a day. They really eat well. One couple with one kid used to get by less than 300 dollars a month for groceries. They are not poor and they have a nanny working for them.

I do eat healthy and spend less than 10 dollars a day for food except I have to

entertain other people. I do take escorts good restaurants though. :)

One of the unfortunate things about this forum (in my opinion) is the lack of postings from Daddy (just 1,087). Personally, I think it would be great to hear from him more in any context that is social rather than disciplinary. I understand why he most likely does not post often, I am sure he is busy, and frankly there are threads here that I don't want to get involved with because they just turn too crazy.

The original post was "Cheap Eats" and in my opinion that was a good title for the subject and is germane to the current economic conditions that effect us all. While I may not exactly eat boxed mac and cheese, or canned peas, I think that the fact that someone who takes the time to share ideas relevant to our time is helpful and welcome.

When someone seems to post all the time (or at least over 11,000 posts) and most of the time is letting us know how "clever" they are compared to the rest of us, I just have to wonder if they have a little too much time on their hands. Generally, I just ignore these posts.

As long as I have been reading this forum (since Hooboy days) I have always recognized that there is a lot of "horn tooting" here. I am not sure exactly why, but generally I would guess that those people who have to convince us as to how clever, privileged, or rich they are have a bit of a self image problem. I am sorry for them that maybe all they have in life is this forum to rely on, if that is the case life must be pretty lonely.

I am going to give the $10 challenge a try, but hopefully you will understand Daddy that I will have to substitute in some green beans since I hate green peas. It was nice to hear from you.

We do the poor no benefit when we encourage them to eat bad food. I've shown above that boxed macaroni is not as healthy as fresh macaroni, which is also no more expensive. Buying a box of breadcrumbs is more expensive than buying a loaf of day old bread. So saying that eating bad food is necessary to provide for the poor is hogwash. I'll concede that free-range chicken can be dropped by those on a budget.

The New York Department of Health runs into this kind of criticism every time it tries to improve the diet of New Yorkers by telling them the detriments of the diet they use. What boxed macaroni and boxed bread crumbs provide is convenience, not economy. If you are so lazy as to be unable to eat well for the sake of your health, then you get the problems that come from a bad diet.

So, call it snobbery if you wish, I call it eating well. The fact is that Americans continue to eat enormous quantities of junk, and think it is some sort of constitutional right. If you have no more respect for your body than to put Spam into it, well, have at it. I hope that you have health insurance.

I like spam too. I sometimes fry it up and eat it with a slice of cheese on white bread. one thing I love to snack on that people give me a hard time over is those fried pork skins. I love those things

You are so insightful. I do have a self image problem and lonely. Where is my prince? I'm not offended. This forum always helped me see myself and make better decisions.

$10 dollar challenge? It's not a challenge in some parts of this country. I admit it will be hard for those in big cities. I stayed away from big cities because the cost of living is high and there are too many bad influences in big cities. Many many many people survive with a couple of hundred dollars a month in the south! My point is some housewives are admirable. They look for bargains, use coupons, go to whole sale groceries and grow their own vegetables.

Whoa, dude. What have I done that threatens you so that you have to indulge in personal attacks? I am not going to come to Portland and take your Cheez-Its away. I've sent you a PM on how to put me on your ignore list so you don't get stressed out by my posts.

My God- Lucky Is A Food Snob!

Remember, this is just an internet message board. You can take from it what you want and leave the rest. If you are happy with your diet, and your doctor agrees with you, then eat on. Why get all hot and bothered when someone suggests healthy eating?

Some people don't want to know the details on the food they eat. So, ignore me. But, just for Greg, whom I like and want to be healthy, I offer this, from howthingswork.com:

Is Spam Good for You?

The short answer: no. Spam is not a healthy thing to eat. A 12-ounce can contains six servings. A single serving holds 16 grams of fat, including six grams of saturated fat. One serving also holds 33 percent of your daily recommended allowance of sodium and a pretty hefty dose of cholesterol. While the reduced sodium and lite versions obviously contain less of the bad stuff, a Spam-heavy diet wouldn't be a good idea.

In fact, some research suggests that Spam (and other processed meats) might increase the risk of cancer. A study by the University of Hawaii found that people who consumed large amounts of processed meat were 67 percent more likely to develop pancreatic cancer. Poultry and dairy consumption was not linked to cancer increases, so fat and cholesterol levels could not be the sole culprit. The researchers suggested that the chemicals used in meat processing may react and form carcinogenic byproducts in the body [source: Nothlings et al]. Sodium nitrite, used in Spam, is one of the most common meat-processing chemicals. Scientists haven't found a definite link between sodium nitrite and cancer, though, so the FDA still considers it safe.

MsGuy-

My family has two continuing "jokes". One is that our grandmothers (great grandmothers?) "complained" about their daughter's cooking so the joke went, no, I didn't grow the wheat, mill it and convert it into bread. The other family joke was the telling of family "stories" or going to the movies, "he" or "she" recounted that story or movie, frame by frame, meaning in excruciating detail. We all have "those" family members, don't we?

Greg-

I think the latest opinion is that "organic" is no better than "other" foodstuff, but certainly more expensive.

Does anyone or everyone agree that "moderation" is the key to a healthy diet? Spam can be consumed as a "treat" (aka another brand of processed ham :)) but not every day. Ditto Mac fries and most other foods. However, who wants to trade longevity for enjoyment? Not me. I wish to enjoy the time I have on Earth but not prolong it by eschewing ANY pleasures. I think many, if not most, might agree.

Best regards,

KMEM

My father had very strange eating habits. He grew up on a farm they raised everything they ate. The had a very large garden, cows, pigs and chickens all meals came from what they raised. My father died 3 years ago at the age of 62 and had never tried pasta of any kind, never ate pizza, never had a taco, Chinese, Mexican or Italian foods what so ever. it was always a meat and 2 veggies type meal or just vegetables
