Oh, there's a great flick named Last Night (not to be confused with About Last Night or the other film entitled Last Night). This one is from 1998, has Sandra Oh in it and is set in Toronto (I think). To tell the plot would be to ruin the viewing experience. Perhaps one of the best ends to a film I've ever seen.

Speaking of Sandra Oh, there's another great film she has a bit part in called Hard Candy which stars the chick from Juno. Very good and disturbing.

One could go on forever, but there's also The Bridge on the River Kwai (a title which nobody ever gets right), The Man Who Would be King, Seven Samurai, Jackie Brown...

Oh hell, I could go on forever. I'll just put a list on my website instead. http://www.laterslater.com/movies.html if anyone wants to see it.

When I need a good laugh, The Ref.

When I need a good cry, Steel Magnolias.

When I need to be reminded why I, still, lust after Tom Cruise, Top Gun.

When I need to sing, The Sound of Music.

When I need a little inspiration, any movie with Lucas Ridgeston.:):)

"McCabe and Mrs. Miller" - fantastic soundtrack and songs by Leonard Cohen, authentic Western mood, great staging, Robert Altman directing, Warren Beatty, Julie Christie....some get upset at the sometimes-difficult-to-understand mumbling of characters, but that is part of the authenticity

"Ballad of Cable Hogue" - Sam Peckinpah directing, also a moody and authentic Western (no Technicolor sunsets), surprising blend of violence and Jason Robards singing!, the preacher character is great

"How The West Was Won" - stereotypical Hollywood Western elements, but great soundtrack and scenery, big list of legendary stars, sweeping and inspirational

"It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" - now a bit dated, but enormous production full of stars and lots of old-fashioned fun, stories of difficult times during production seem understandable, lots of recognizable scenes in SoCal

The Bests

I can never single out one, and the list changes from time to time. At the moment --

"All About Eve";

"Billy Elliot";

Hitchcock: "North by Northwest," "Vertigo," "Notorious";

"The Shop Around the Corner" (first, Lubitsch version);

Preston Sturges:"The Lady Eve," Sullivan's Travels," "Hail, the Conquering Hero";

But what about "Meet Me in St. Louis," "Lawrence of Arabia," "The Searchers".......and on? I just can't stop.

A couple of other's I've not seen mentioned yet . . .

Looking at Kevin Slater's list, I see he included The Life & Times of Harvey Milk, but

did not mention a slightly older documentary called

"Word is Out - Stories of Our Lives".

It's not much on plot, but I would (and did) highly, highly, recommend it to anybody

who was curious about what it was like to be gay in the 70's and before.

Has anybody mention "Blade Runner" yet? Although it's rather more depressing than

most movies I would normally watch, it was extremely well crafted.

Although Slater liked Nightmare before Xmas and Edwards Scissorshands he didn't

include Corps Bride (which I thought was way cute).

I generally view film favorites as when I see them on the TV I stop sit and can not keep changing the channel:

1. Lord of The Rings-Trilogy

2. Indianna Jones-Original only

3. Jaws-Original, one of the great lines of all time, "You're gonna need a bigger boat." Robert Shaw as Quint was brilliant.

4. Planes, Trains and Automobiles-Steve Martin is best as a straight man to John Candy's incredible facial responses. The piano playling on the dashboard with the cigarette getting lost and getting tied up in the seat belt is hillarious.

5. Godfather-1 & 2 took Marlon Brando 10 years to be brilliant again and stars created, Pacino, De Niro, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire.

6. Silence of the Lambs

7. North by Northwest

8. Rear Window

9. The Birds

10. My guilty pleasures-Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady

That's because he didn't care for Corpse Bride, finding the characters flat and the story not compelling.

Thanks for the recommendation of Word is Out. I'll have to see if the local independent video store has it; Netflix does not.

Not that there are any lingering doubts about just how gay that I really am, my favorite movies (as in, the ones that I can pretty much quote line for line, sadly) are:

Postcards from the Edge ( Mind if I have a drink? Mind if I drop acid?)

All About Eve (Zanuck, Zanuck, Zanuch.... what are you two lovers??)

Boys in the Band (well, at least, the first half)

Mommie Dearest (the boys and the booze...)

Steels Magnolias (I love you more than my luggage)

Cabaret (about as fatale as an after dinner mint)

Chicago (and then some)

Valley of the Dolls (when I was 10, I thought it was a real place) (At least, I never married one)

Infamous (how do you know I am strange?...)

Doloros Claiborne (sometimes an accident is an unhappy woman's best friend)

Coal Miner's Daughter (Let's just call the lawyers and get a divorce)

Sweet Dreams (even though Beverly D'Angelo was the better Patsy Cline as listed above) (Home to see the pig)

And then there are the smaller gay themed independents that I love (all of which I just watched again during my snow days):

Burnt Money ... hottest man ever ... Edoudo Noriega... and I LOVE anything Argentinian.

Mysterious Skin... great film and I actually know the author's father....

Open Cam... hot sex and the lead actor's ass.

Come Undone... a french film with the best filmed gay sex ever.

Hard... just nasty.

Bad Education... Gael getting penetrated and mean priests, oh my.

Beefcake.... obviously.

Psycho Beach Party... funny as Hell and Charles Busch.

And then to completely discredit me and my taste in men and movies, there are the ones that just suck me in every time... the ones that if I am flipping channels, I just can't get past:

Bring it On

Sugar and Spice

Practical Magic

28 Days

Hope Floats

Sweet Home Alabama

Sex and the City (Gilles ass!!!!!!)

You know there is a movie that I will always stop to watch and it is just because of one man's unbelievably hot ass that movie is Exit to Eden with many famous people and I belive his name is Paul Mercutio running around showing his ass running, skating, getting whipped, standing while chained arms extended accentuate just how fucking perky his ass is etc. Also in it are Dana Delany Rosie O"Donnell and Dan Akyroyd BTW it is a comedy just not very funny

OKIE,

Justaguy and I were just going over how quotable steele magnolias is it seems like every line is memorable:

Honey, time marches on and eventually you realize it is marchin' across your face

This is the eighties. If you can achieve puberty, you can achieve a past.

I do not see plays, because I can nap at home for free. And I don't see movies 'cause they're trash, and they got nothin' but naked people in 'em! And I don't read books, 'cause if they're any good, they're gonna make 'em into a miniseries.

Get your roots done!

Looks like two pigs fightin' under a blanket.

When it comes to pain and suffering, she's right up there with Elizabeth Taylor

Well, we went skinny dipping and we did things that frightened the fish.

I promise that my personal tragedy will not interfere with my ability to do good hair.

There's so much static electricity in this room, I pick up everything but boys and money.

Well, you know what they say: if you don't have anything nice to say about anybody, come sit by me!

he's so confused he don't know whether to scratch his watch or wind his butt.

The only reason people are nice to me is because I have more money than God.

I'm not as sweet as I used to be.

I love ya more than my luggage.

I'm not crazy, I've just been in a very bad mood 40 years!

That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.

The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.

You are evil, and you must be destroyed...Mother Nature's taking care of that faster than you could.

Oh, honey, God don't care which church you go, long as you show up!

Ousier's never done a religious thing in her life. ... Now that is not true. When I was in school, a bunch of my friends and I would dress up as nuns and go bar-hoppin'.

I'd recognize this penmanship anywhere. You have the handwritin' of a serial killer.

you sound almost chipper. What happened today - you run over a small child or something?

My secrets out. I'm having an affair with a Mercedes Benz

these thighs haven't gone out of the house without lycra on them since I was 14.

He's a real gentleman! I bet he takes the dishes out of the sink before he PEES in it!

the nicest thing I can say about her is all her tattoos are spelled correctly

M'Lynn, you just missed the chance of a lifetime! Half o' Chiquapin Parish'd give their eye teeth to take a whack at Ouiser!

He is a boil on the butt of humanity!

AND OF COURSE MY FAVE:

All gay men have track lightin'. And all gay men are named Mark, Rick, or Steve

If you cant remember the lines its time to see the movie again

Steele Magnolias' one-liners are maybe the best of all movies. I find myself using at least one, if not several, each day. Saw the movie again over the holidays and I'm sure I picked up some more which probably were already on your list. Thanks for sharing your list. I'll never tire of quoting those fabulous actresses and their one-line deliveries.

-The Manchurian Candidate (The Frank Sinatra/Janet Leigh version)

I can think of no film where the remake is better than the original. (That being said, I haven't seen the 1932 version of Scarface, and perhaps some Shakespearean adaptations may be excepted.)

And if you like Manchurian Candidate, I'd also recommend Paralax View and Seven Days in May (Eva Gardner-- what a foxy role she had). Speaking of (#) Days in (Month), Four Days in September and One Day in September are both great as well.

The least expected and funniest line I ever saw in a movie was when Bette Midler proclaimed "I've been kindapped by K-Mart"; I think the title of the flick was "Ruthless People".

Many of the great movie lines I can think of are from Airplane. (Surely you can't be serious! I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.)

Also, from A Gun, a Car, a Blonde, a modern-day noir set in Los Angeles: "I wondered what her angle was. Everybody has an angle, especially in this... City of Angles."

A few more...

Bonnie and Clyde ... because Clyde "ain't no lover boy"

Suddenly, Last Summer.... because Sebastion Venable was "dying for blondes"

Butterfield 8.... because she was the most desirable woman in town and the easiest to find..

The Philadelphia Story... because of Cary Grant...

And two WAY off the charts...

Girl with an Itch..... because she "have negligee, will travel"

Pickup... because "they gave her a bad name and she lived up to it"

Bart thinks of Mary Poppins as a guilty pleasure?? Really?? I thought that would be more like "Deliverance"? I'm just.... um ... squealing.

Sadly, no , I am not.
