When I did, I loved being spontaneous and picking a random show to see. But, with more limited dollars, I might have to be pickier now. I don't live there any more, so I can only ask New Yorkers to let me live vicariously on their experiences.

So, could someone take in Rasta Thomas' Bad Boys of Dance? It starts soon and goes to January 3d. If I were there, I'd have seen Ballet Hispanico ending this weekend.

And, for a play, I would have gone to the New York Theater Workshop, where they have The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter. It's getting a big spread in the Times today, and, given how small their theater is, it will surely sell out. So could someone please see that for me? Thanks.

There are many other shows to see, of course, so I hope those who attend are prompt in reporting in here as to what you have seen. Some of the guys posting in Steven Draker's thread about what to see never post their show reviews...hint, hint!

Too expensive and crowded

to live in NY for me. I am an avid nature lover. My love musicals and etc. though but other smaller cities offer a lot events these days.

The hills are alive with the sound of music~~~

"The Late Christopher Bean"

One of the best plays in New York in some time, "The Late Christopher Bean," closes its limited run this weekend. I was fortunate to see it twice. The run extended by a week. A shame it can't play an open-end run somewhere.

I don't live there any more

Jes' hang on! As discussed. ;)

... Random association calls up Woody Allen's bit: Do you like the idea of living on, on the silver screen? "I'd rather live on in my apartment."

While I am lamenting not being in New York, tonight we saw a delightful amateur production of the musical Oliver. The cast was just great, especially 10 year old Oliver and 13 year old (looks 10) Artful Dodger. Fagen was well-cast as well.

So, right here in my backyard there is great theater. After the show we met the kids, they look so small to be so polished. Oliver had way too much energy even after 2 1/2 hours on stage.

...One of many reasons why it is so much easier to be the beloved uncle than the despised parent.

My good friend saw Rasta Thomas's Bad Boys of Dance last summer when he was in Barcelona and alerted me of their being in Santa Rosa, CA in November on the 27th. Well, I managed to buy a ticket for VIP seating in the balcony and enjoyed this group's fare immensely, esp. the second 15 numbers. They were stellar!

If you are in NYC now, wanna see a gay play with serious themes and booty on display? Check out "Loaded" at the Lions Theatre in Theatre Row (W. 42 Street). Two seriously hot actors, full frontal at times, sexually and politically charged dialogue. As you might expect, the audience is 95% gay male and cruisy as well.

Isn't Loaded sold out for the entire run? It's in a very small theater, so we will probably have to wait for it to grow a bit.

Sorry Lucky, the holiday season is turning out to be much busier than I anticipated and it looks like I cannot include many of the events listed in your post in my schedule.

I can say that I witnessed one of the most awful pieces of crap on Broadway the other night. A new David Mamet snooze called "Race." It was terrible. A totally disappointing evening at the theater with a lackluster cast and a script that should have been burned. Could Richard Thomas have any more botox, or was it a face lift that took his birthmark up into his hairline?

However, Broadway often has the ability to redeem itself and I saw "Ragtime" on Thursday evening and had a remarkably fun and entertaining evening at this musical. Unlike "Race," this cast was terrific and the music wonderful. I highly recommend this musical and go soon before it closes on January 18th! Allowing this show to close after only one month is a disgrace!

Last night I ventured over to Zankel Hall downstairs at Carnegie Hall to enjoy country/pop/rock performer Shelby Lynne. If you haven't heard this gal sing, well, you're surely missing out on a big talent. She pretty, funny and enormously talented.

This week I'm off to hear Handel's Messiah at Lincoln Center, and Chris Botti at the Blue Note. This in between a few holiday parties and dinners.

I wish you, and all on the message board, a happy holiday season and a healthy and happy 2010!

BTW, I'll be in Montreal for New Year's Eve and will be attending the festivities at The Stock Bar!

I rarely get to NYC these days what with all the stuff going on in my life, all of which is good. So I can't report on any plays or other entertainments. But reading Ed's post, I thought I might be in Montreal New Year's eve so maybe we can share a cocktail at Stock (altho I'll retreat to Campus which I prefer).

It will depend on the weather as I plan to be skiing the week in between Xmas and New Years at my chalet and will go to Montreal if weather permits. I live half a block from Stock so if I get to Montreal, getting to Stock is not a problem, even if it's a raging snowstorm.

I am in the process of moving from Ottawa where I have a pied a terre to a town on the St Lawrence River south of here by an hour. I found a delightful 150 year old stone house in the town where my grandmother was a third generation and so I'll be a fifth generation (my father spent 10 years there in his youth). Lots of work in moving but I'll look forward to the holidays for a break!

I'll give you an update soon, when I get some free time. I've been too busy lately and didn't have enough time to check in regularly here.

Cheers,

Loaded

I don't know if it's sold out for the run, but there were a handful of empty seats at the performance I saw on Saturday afternoon. Sometimes shows that are sold out have last minute cancellations from people, so it is good to be in touch with the box office. And if a show is completely selling out, they can sometimes extent the run.

Loaded

I'm seeing Loaded on Thursday night. I've heard good things about it, so I'm anxious to see it. It's at the Lion's Theater on 42nd St.

Afterwards, I'll hit The Ritz to see how their go-go boy dance night is.

ed, apology for blatant minor highjack. But (manfully passing over your dead-on Richard Thomas crack!) one is driven to observe that every Mamet excrescence after Speed-the-Plow should, to this jaundiced eye, have been put in the shredder. I've sat through productions of Oleanna, The Cryptogram (with a distressingly embalmed Ed Begley, Jr. in a lead role), The Old Neighborhood and others -- all, to my mind, disasters. Glengarry & other past triumphs carry only so far.

".....manfully......" What is that supposed to mean?

Sneaky way for me to commend ed's delicious insult to R. Thomas while pretending to hold myself aloof & above same. OK?

Ragtime

Just saw Ragtime! Fantastic production, especially Quentin Earl Darrington, an unknown making his Broadway debut in the lead role of Coalhouse Walker Jr. What a voice! What dramatic chops! Be sure to see this.
