Well there may be better role models for young gay men, but he did pursue a dream and succeed while out as a gay man. He is not afraid of being controversial and he has not attacked those that have attacked him. He comes across as personable and grounded. I don't know him personally, but his public persona is one I would be happy to have young gay men emulate. I really don't know what pudgy has to do with being a role model except if you are expecting him to be a fitness role model. His choice of personal grooming, again not a major player in being a role model.

It is unfortunate that there is a dearth of out gay men role models in the public eye.

Adam is the flavor of the moment and for the most part, IMO, a positive force.

Any chance we can have a moratorium on him for 2010? I'm sure we can find far better role models for young gay men than this pudgy, makeuped, excuse for a freak show.

I am not a fan of Adam's but I think this is a bit harsh. Must I remind you it was the "freaks" that were pudgy, gay men who wore make up that kicked ass in a little NYC bar called Stonewall and kicked off the gay rights movement. Quit being a pompass ass and please remove that stick from your bum.

The unfortunate wretch just isn't up to Operalover's standards.

Well said, PurpleKow!

Couldn't agree more, PK! Thanks for writing so eloquently what I was thinking.

Can we please stop making up facts? He didn't "pursue a dream" and "succeed while out as a gay man." In fact, he did the opposite. Mr. Lambert himself admits that he refused to say he was gay during the entire run of American Idol because he didn't want to lose votes.

Let's not change the facts of the situation to fit the worldview we want. He played coy. I don't think that is something to look up to. He didn't on the first day say "I'm gay and that's that. He refused to. As someone who has been OUT since I was 18 years old -- no matter the situation -- I don't consider his behavior to be that of a role model. He wanted to play it both ways. I don't buy into that.

I'll take Neil Patrick Harris as a role model any day of the week.

EXPAT I like the clip you posted and if I have a say keep posting Adam pics and videos.

Adam didn't ever say he was or wants to be a role model. There are many gay celebs that are not role models but are quite enjoyable.

I might take you serious if you stopped the personal attacks on a person you don't know. It's childish.

Hey I like Neil Patrick Harris as well, but he is a decade older than Adam Lambert, and has only been out for the last several years. So I am not exactly sure how Harris is a role model for someone who came out at age 18.

No Moratorium on Adam, Please.

Operalover21: How can you logically bash Adam Lambert for not coming out "on the first day" of American Idol and then in the next paragraph praise Neil Patrick Harris?

Fact check: NPH didn't come out until age 33 (many years after enjoying fame as Doogie Houser, M.D.) and only after a report about Harris' romantic relationship with actor David Burtka surfaced online.

I, for one, appreciate the talents of both Adam and Neil and am happy they are both playing for "our team" and that they are out and proud.

Respectfully,

Is there some reason that just because Adam Lambert is gay and is a pop star we need to make him a gay role model. How about just enjoying his music , or not, as the case may be and enjoying the fact that if nothing else Adam Lambert is in your face as himself. No matter what we may think of him He pushes the boundary.

Im not saying he is a role model for gay Americans, or that he is not, but at least he is a role model for be who you are and the world may love you just for that. Along those same lines who caught the Barbara Walters top ten of 2009 interview with Lada Gaga. I was very impressed, a singer with some brains and a strong self identity. Now if she were only a man we could make her the new gay poster boy. LOL

Let's say what we mean Operalover. You have made it clear you are a lawyer, so fact manipulation is probably a forte for you. He was out to family and friends and had an ongoing boyfriend. He did not come out again on American Idol. Contestants are encouraged to paint their personal lives in certain ways by the producers of the show. Kris Allen, the eventual winner was told to play down his marriage so as to enhance his chances at winning the young girl vote. He complied. I believe it was also you who, unfairly in my opinion, complained about Danny flaunting his dead wife. If, while on American Idol, Adam was trying to hide the fact that he was gay, I don't think he will be joining Jennifer Hudson as an Academy Award Winner. During the show he was photographed with his boyfriend and it was widely reported that he had a boyfriend.

After AI, I don't actually recall any significant press coverage of Adam's reconfirming to the press that he was gay. Certainly nothing compared to Lance Bass or even NPH, who was also out and living with a boyfriend for years before his being gay became "news". Adams revelation did not merit as much coverage because lets face it, it wasn't "news" even to the minimal level that passes for news these days.

Actually, wasn't there was a "Rolling Stone" coming out cover that hit newsstands the week after the AI finale? I suspect that contract had something to do with "who knew, when" too.

All this brouhaha is funny though. Elton John and Boy George are both laughing up their sleeves watching someone "flamboyant" getting attention as if nobody has ever done it before. Even Marilyn Manson is probably enjoying this show.

Jeez, people.

NPH didn't come out until he was threatened to be outed. If it wasn't for that he would probably still be silent on the subject. He figured that as he was going to be "exposed" he might as well do it himself.

Deej, And just maybe David Bowie and Alice Cooper are having a beer and laugh together too :p

I like Adam as I noted before. He never said he was a role model Mr. operalover21.

I have to give the kid props. He's comfortable in his own skin.

Finally watched his appearance on "The View". Joy Behar made a comment about him not being "your average Jewish boy". Without skipping a beat he replied "yeah, my dredel spins the other direction".

LOL
