I just caught up with this movie on dvd.

Since most of what I wear comes from Target, my couture is hardly haute. Still I find the fashion world fascinating and it's nice to see a gay relationship between Valentino and his partner Giancarlo Giammetti that has lasted for 50 years. The rag trade has certainly rewarded them well and they have some nice (six) homes with an army of help, plus an army of dogs who live better than most of us can ever hope for.

The clothes are really amazing and the movie very entertaining. Now I have to go look and see if I can find anything red in my closet.

hmm

Same here. I rarely buy clothes for myself whatever I get I give it away to my friends and co-workers. However, I like to read Vogue.

I can see how other people think, perceive and express themselves in a magazine like Vouge. There are a lot of pieces of information in just one picture and sometimes it is difficult to digest them. However, if you dissect a picture into pieces then you can see something fun and interesting... I think that is why the fashion world is so fascinating to me. It's like appreciating an art. It clearly shows our desire to better ourselves...

I think you would change your mind when you see the first and the second one on a runway. Actually I like it..:)

Is it the outfits you like or the models? ;)

Can you tell me honestly that you would wear outfit #2 outside in broad daylight some place where people knew your name?

I would say "Unequivocally YES". I would wear that in broad daylight where people know my name. In fact I may be wearing it, look for me in the parade a week from next Saturday.

Was an interesting peek into his world....

I just caught up with this movie on dvd.

foxy, I watched this just last week and was struck by a few things....

-I was surprised at how dependant Valentino was on his seamstresses.....they were the ones who brought his sketches to life, and seem to be unsung heroes of his creations.

-the comment from his lover about "toning down the tan" was funny

-Karl Lagerfeld is such a scream! (I wonder how he dresses up for Halloween?!)

-I wished the editors had lingered a half second or so longer on many of the dresses. They really are works of art, but the fast editing moved on to the next one before I'd had a chance to completely enjoy the one before.

-His house in Paris.........c'est magnifique!

-I quite liked the oversized safari hat

The director shot hundreds of hours of film so maybe there will be a sequel. It would have been nice to linger on the clothes a bit more and yes, the seamstresses did all the heavy lifting. Oddly, they seem to love him and I'm sure Valentino could be a real terror. His partner must deserve a lot of credit for keeping the business and him afloat.

I've only been to one runway show. A friend invited me since I never would have gotten in the door by myself. It was for women's swimwear (unfortunately) but the show was amazing. Like something from the 30's Olympics. What surprised me was how in control the models were. There's more to it than that funny walk they do. They are like actresses who take control of the stage and they always looked pissed off which I think is funny. I suppose being hungry all the time helps.

lol

Yes honestly I like it and I will wear it. However, I won't be able to wear it without any modification because I don't have his body type. I would modify a bit to fit it to my body and change a little bit to hide my not so great body parts. I really like "the concept" of the outfit. As I have said you might change your mind once you see it on a runway. I may be subjective but I wanted to make my point. :)

Greatness, I just don't have it in me to wear something like that. Hell, I won't even wear designer blue jeans! Please forgive me but I grew up in a town where 90% of the houses were painted white with black shutters. The occasional white house with dark green shutters really stood out. I'm the despair of my fashion conscious friends. :o

There is nothing wrong

I don't think there is anything to forgive. It is just your personal preference. A person doesn't have to wear fancy clothes. You can look very nice with a simple pair of jeans. I think you will look good whatever you wear :) MsGuy chin up and walk like a super model. It's not what you wear but how you express your inner self that matters.

I actually went to see this movie a handful of months back when I was visiting in NYC and thought it was just amazing with wonderful glimpses into the life of a great clothing designer. While I didn't know much about Valentino except for what was on the news and of course his unfortunate death, it was very refreshing to see sides of Valentino that were not just all about the glitz and glamor but also about his personal life, stress and his relationship with his beloved partner and business companion. The story of how they met at a cafe was cute but both of them seemed to disagree with when and where it happened. YIKES!

It is true that his partner was the man behind the curtain who IMHO, really did keep things together for the business and should be credited with the immense task as Valentino (like most mega stars) need a supporting man OR woman to keep them afloat, grounded and feet on the ground. The movie was full of laughter, some very serious and real moments of raw human emotion and of course those dogs of his. I was really impressed with how the mannequins were lit up and showcased on the wall with many of his most famous and signature designs - very well done. Of course his homes were wonderful!

I would highly recommend this movie to all as it was quite entertaining, factual but also very real not to mention the clothing was just amazing and the models were just out of this world. :)

The movie was a true delight and wonderful insight into the life of a man who is still and will forever be well known as long as people continue to wear his clothes now and forever with the label of Valentino.

LIVE ON MY FRIEND! Live on... :) He was a true artist in the fashion world.

Clarification...

Romann, are you confusing Valentino with Yves Saint Laurent (died June 1, 2008)?

I believe Valentino (at age 77) is still alive and kicking.

Then I stand corrected... I could have sworn somewhere in my mind he had died or was murdered at one of his homes but apparently my memory did not serve me well in my post.

Thank you for that bit of news and I sincerely apologize for my statement.

No need to apologize for white houses with black shutters. It's a classic look and has always been my favorite, especially in New England towns where they seem to be the only appropriate look.

As for designer jeans - I think their main reason for being is so the manufacturers can charge three times what they are worth. Whats wrong with good old Levi's?
