Something i dont remember seeing here is any debate about guns.I would be interested to know how many people own a gun and what they think of the way guns can be purchased.

In my job i carry a gun and i have been forced to use it on occasion and also have been on the receiving end of guns several times.I am a very good shot and in my youth i did clay pigeon shooting. In my house there is a total of 6 guns (too many ?).

I am not a card carrying member of the NRA unlike a lot of my fellow cops and i truly believe that people should not be able to walk into a store and purchase a gun,i've seen what a gun can do and the amount of illegal guns on the streets in America is frightening.

I honestly believe that in todays super fast information age a system could be set up with government funding if needed to have a countrywide system which would let people who sell weapons to run checks on people with something as simple as a fingerprint check to determine identity so if a citizen wants to purchase a gun for safety/sports whatever they can be checked out first to make sure they aint some psycho.

I believe most people would be willing to do this despite the shouts that no doubt would occur that it would be a breach of civil liberty and because the right to bear arms is part of the Constitution, but what people have to remember that the Constitution was drafted in very different times to those we live in now and i think that peoples safety is paramount.

Interested as always what you think.

I am a card carrying member of the NRA. I've been to Africa 3 times (Tanzania, Okavango Delta and Natal) big game hunting, I also hunt in Alaska and Europe, and the last time I was bird hunting in South Africa I killed about 550 dove with an 20 gauge over and under on Easter morning. I love guns. I also love very strict laws regarding the illegal use of guns and mandatory gun safety courses. Gun control has been proven to be ineffective - but it sure feels real good - even if it does abridge certain rights.

i have one.

i learned to shoot when i was a little kid. i feel that was a good thing. i was taught to properly use & respect a gun. i learned it isn't a toy. i learned how dangerous it can be in the hands of an idiot.

(Apologies in advance, Ethan, but you had to know a bit of humor would come after your post.)

So you're telling us you're cocked and loaded? :+

I keep a loaded Winchester 1300 under my bed. It’s actually designed for women or boys, but I like it’s compact size. I have always been paranoid, perhaps even phobic, about being cornered in my bedroom. Since I live on an upper floor and would not want to jump out of the window if an intruder got in my house, I figure there is nothing like the sound of a shotgun pump to make them turn around and go the other way.

I have never used it. In fact, I’ve never even had a situation where I pulled it out, but it makes me feel better to know that it is there. I take it out a couple of times a year to blow the holy hell out of cans and bottles and use up the shells. Fresh shells, a good cleaning, and it’s back under the bed.

Like homeowner association rules, I am in favor of gun control for OTHER people. I know that I’m not going to do anything stupid, but I would sure like to get the guns out of the hands of all those other folks.

Seriously, I think there should be strict control of handguns and any assault type weapons. You can accomplish all your sporting and self-protection needs with rifles and shotguns that can’t be as easily hidden or used for mass murder.

Posted

Why would anyone need six guns? I am in favor of complete gun control. Nobody needs these assault weapons that are so easily available.

I have a burglar alarm under my bed as well. It says Louisville Slugger on it.

If a burglar comes in, he WILL be fucking alarmed. :o

My take has always been that if he's already in, it's too late for me to use a gun. By the time I wake up and fish for the gun, he's got me. If he's not already in, I don't need a weapon other than the phone.

I'm in favor of the Canadian approach. Just outlaw personal firearms.

But that's just me. I'm just an urban-dwelling fag who still routinely sleeps with his back door wide open to get a nice breeze.

lucky... i suggest you contact aish hatorah & tell them you want to go on a birthright fellowship to jerusalem (ps: just tell them you're jewish). not only will you discover many fascinating things about judaism & my people, you'll also do some really cool self-defence exercises with the IDF.

you don't know excitement until you've fired an uzi!

RE: my advice for deej

I have central a/c but only need it about 10 days/year.

I lived in the DC "hot, hazy, humid" climate for 10 years so I can see why A/C would be really important to some but here we just don't need it much.

I like fresh air.

And I'll stick with the burglar alarm I already have. It's been working for 40+ years.

RE: rest of the civilised world crap

I find the "love-it-or-leave-it" attitude equally annoying. It's neither here-nor-there that the U.S. has performed admirably on the world stage on numerous ocassions, nor that it has raped, pillaged, and murdered on numerous ocassions. (Ask, oh, Allende how brilliantly the U.S. "protected" him and democracy in his country.) The U.S. is as fallible as any organization assembled by man. Deal with it.

Don't like guns, don't have or want one, prefer to avoid them (I have only one friend who's required to carry a gun), zero interest in shooting, hunting, etc. As for the sad state of gun regulation in the U.S., I agree with you, Rush, that such a system wouldn't be too difficult to implement, but there are still the corrupt and crooked gun shops and dealers that won't comply, and all the loopholes that the N.R.A. will drive through (gun shows, for example). So we'll just go on shooting each other at a rate the rest of the civilized world finds quite astonishing.

Lucky,i agree when i was writing the original message i thought to myself why did i have 6 guns in the house its something that been that way for so long it just gets to be a normal everyday thing.

What i am gonna do is get rid of the ones i dont need both my BF and i carry guns in our jobs so i think 2 plus my pops old service revolver which i wanna keep as a memory will be enough,i think the reports i have seen say there are 300 million illegal guns in America one for everyman, woman and child in the country so the less guns not needed the better.

Whats your address again deej ;-).

I think burglar with gun vs homeowner with baseball bat hmmm i think i know which my money would be on,what would you do swat away the bullets when he shoots you that i'd pay money to watch .

Seriously everyone has the right to personal safety in their own home and do whatever within the law to feel safe and secure.

Now thats the apartment with "BURGLE ME" in big letters on the side of the building-LOL !

I've actually had this very discussion with several of my American clients.

Coming from a country where guns are controlled to a greater degree, my perceptions are skewed...some would say 'screwed'.

It seems obvious to an outsider, that a lot of the violent crime in the US, would be taken care of, with stronger gun control legislation...... Oh shit I'm walking a mine field here....

I realize that is a HUGE (galaxy sized) generalization, and there are a million variables, but logic says, "take handguns away, there will be less death by shootings".

Arguements...

1)Criminals will still get guns... yes, but it will be a little bit harder to get them.

2)Knives, what about knives? They kill... yes but they aren't nearly as lethal, and pulling a trigger by accident, is a lot easier to do when pointing a gun at someone, than accidently stabbing someone 15times.

3)Taking guns away from honest civilians, means we can't protect ourselves... Gun legislation can come in many different forms.... a waiting period... what is so wrong with having to wait two weeks to be able to aquire a gun? It makes sense that a thourough security background check is run on everyone interested in buying a potentially lethal weapon. No?

think about it this way... Airport security is nuts right now, yeah it's a hassle, but most people accept it, becuase they would rather go through that than the alternative possible scenarios. Now apply that to guns....

ok I realize my argument is full of holes, and blah blah blah, it's your god given right as Americans to bear/bare/beer arms.... yada yada....

compare the number of deaths by gunshot in other countries, to that of the US. Per Capita.

There are more gunshot deaths in DC in a year, than there are MURDERS, by any means, in Canada.... ok we've only got maybe 5 people living up here and we're too busy building igloos, shovelling snow, and teaching our olympic figure skaters how to complain and annoy, just enough until they get a gold medal.... but still: )

Do Not quote me on any of the vague statistics(or lack thereof) For I have not officially checked numbers, and basically I'm just speaking out of my maple leaf lovin, beaver worshiping ass.

rest of the civilised world crap

ya know, i find it so completely annoying when folks (ESPECIALLY americans) whine about how boorish we are & how we utterly horrify the 'rest of the civilised world.'

guess what? the wild, yahoo, gung-ho, gun-toting, criminal killing, rude, arrogant USA saved the freaking rest of the world on a couple of ocassions during the last century. we've made some incredible leaps forward for humankind.

the civilised world can lick our collective left nut... and we'll go on protecting them. that's just what americans do.

Our borders are so open that a million or so people come in illegally each year. That being so, we have no chance of controlling guns, drugs or anything else. A big part of the drug problem is that they are brought in by the aliens, and if guns were illegal, smuggling them would be as big a business as drugs. All we could accomplish is to take guns away from honest people who want them for self defense or sport. Criminals would still have them in abundance. Another part of the problem is that liberals want to outlaw them altogether, and will not give up working for that end. The NRA and others who want guns for self defense and sport have no choice but to resist all attempts at control. Any compromise would not be permanent, but would just be a step toward the liberal goal of zero tolerance.

People who buy guns for self protection are idiots. It will only lead to your own injury with almost evey intrusion. However, if psychologically its helps, whatever. Gun control doesn't work. I own 24 guns; 20 of which are very valuable collector's items. My father's collection is about 150. But you can't collect guns, can you? Just have yer shotgun for ducks and yer rifle for bucks.

PS. Rabbit hunting on the Wyoming plateau is much more sporting with a PISTOL.

Not nearly as sporting as bear hunting with a bow & arrow.

this little thing...

well, matt, there's something getting in the way of your suggestions.

you see, here in the US, we have this cute little relic called the CONSTITUTION. in it, we are guaranteed the right peacefully to bear arms. saying "oh, golly chaps, no more handguns" would require a constitutional amendment. have you ever been south of--say--new york? that's not likely to pass, given our process(es) for ratifying amendments.

RE: Canadian Views

isn't it a bit disingenuous to make an argument relying on supposed "facts" and figures, but to then say that you cannot be challenged on them because you have no idea if they are true or not?

do you have any idea what the homicide by gunshot figure for DC was? have you a clue what canada's actual homicide rate was?

no? well, then your entire argument is specious, at best.
