I had a dinner at a teppanyaki restaurant yesterday. The chef who cooked for us started with a silly Michael Jackson's jokes and then kept bashing gays. All the people at our table were straight couples except me. He pushed my limit by saying gays were shit eating ........ Apparently he had been suspended for two weeks due to a complaint before. He proudly said a gay guy in a "pink" shirt complained and that he got suspended. He added that the guy in "pink" shirt was one of those guys who wanted free food and he got it from the manager. "They all want free food!" he said and I wasn't sure he was specifically referring to gays. I am secure enough not to be hurt by his silly jokes but why do people pick on other people because they are different. Maybe he is not secure about his sexuality?

People continue to bash/pick on other people because we let them. Don't. In my opinion, he's not a silly chef. He's a homophobic asshole who deserves to be fired. It is not too late to complain to management.

Being secure with ones self is nice but regardless it sounds like not only was he out of line but out of the ballpark with his comments. Unlike you who was able to remain calm I'd have went off on him and not apologize after I was done.

I know

I thought about filing a complaint but I can't bear the fact that he will lose his job in this bad economy. I know I am a sucker. I just can't do it so I left.

By not speaking up to mgt about this you are in effect saying that what he said was alright. That is not cool. Sorry but that is a cowardly cop out.

You have a point

I agree I guess it should be stopped. Poor guy..he begged us not to report him so he doesn't have to go back to Waffle House. He got suspended before and didn't learn his lesson so I guess letting him fly this time won't help either, I guess.

From my perspective, the man should absolutely lose his job ... especially since he had already been suspended for making similar remarks.

First of all, he obviously knew what he was saying was wrong, because he "begged" you not to report him so he didn't have "to go back to Waffe House".

Secondly, and most important, what he did was wrong ... regardless of whether he was talking about gays, women, overweight people, black people, etc. His job was to cook, not to provide "entertainment" by insulting people.

I personally feel it is your moral obligation to report his actions. Each person who doesn't report his actions gives him the impession that what he said is acceptable.

I have to agree that you should have reported his remarks to management - or at least let us know where this restaurant is -- to avoid it.

On one side, by letting him pass on this, the management of the restaurant (eg the other cooks, waters etc...) all get a bad name. If he is such a bigot and so loud abd brash about it, he may deserve being dumped to learn what it means to be "marginated".

On the other side, he continues in his bigotted attitudes and does not learn the serious lesson of the consequences of his actions.

There is no way I would defend this clown but his job IS to entertain you as part of his job description. Don Rickles and others have made careers from "insults". My only point is there are always more sides to every story. It is difficult to know exactly what punishment might fit the crime in this case without being there during as well as having a little time to reflect upon his words. I would hate to have him at a Waffle House; the WH's deserve better. :)

I once had a dealer in Las Vegas make similar remarks. I think he was just bored and decided to "entertain" the table. I caught the eye of a pit boss who came over and listened a bit. The table wasn't laughing and pretty soon this guy shut up.

I'm curious about the reaction of your table mates. Did any of these straight couples object or did they just sit there in silence? Were they friends of yours or was this an open seating situation? It’s a very awkward situation for sure but you would think that in these supposedly progressive times there'd be a few straights in this situation who would object to such behavior. Perhaps they agreed with his sentiments?

The management should be made aware that this guy is affecting their business, which means that soon the other employees' jobs could be at stake as well.

Posted

If this guy is making comments like that to the customers, imagine what he saying when they are not around. Think of the gay busboy or other employee who has to listen to this shit all of the time. Or worse, be harassed by this idiot. There is no question that you should report him.

Posted

I'm pretty sure I'd have said something. Not to his manager, but to him. Something like, "Lucky nobody here is offended by crudeness or dinner talk about eating shit. It would be a shame to lose a tip from a table this size or, worse, lose your job again."

First agree with ArVaguy's statement. If the rest of the table was laughing along with him, they are egging him on. That would be more disappointing to me.

Second, I believe I would have raised my hand and asked "Before continuing could you wait a moment while I go out to my car and put my pink shirt on." I would have followed this comment with, "I'll be sure to include 'The Chef's witty banter about gays added to my delightful meal' while I write my review for the local paper." This way he and the rest of the table would feel uncomfortable and not you. The chef can squirm for several days. Your point is made and the rest of the people at the table can go home with the thought that maybe one should think about what they may protest about in "public", but in "private" it is okay to bash others.

Yeah

You have a point. There are many entertainers who make nasty comments and thrive. We see that a lot on TV.

You're Not a Sucker

You are a insecure gutless Schmuck. You paid to let this toilet-holed-bigot abuse you and

everyone else who is gay.

If he were concerned about his job he would remember that every customer and every

person is valuable, important and worthy of respect regardless of their sexual orientation.

ethnicity, religion, cultural heritage or race.

To listen to that crap without speaking up is inexcuseable and empowers homophobes,

haters, bigots and bashers everywhere - It makes them believe that it is okay to devalue

human life that is different from themselves. To quote our brothers from Act-Up

Silence = Death.

Shame on you - Shame. . .

Sometimes a wakeup smack is kinder than a caress

Well K - If you go to a Nazi Party or a Republican Party Meeting in Fag-Fuck Alabama -

hearing such comments are to be expected. When you go into a restaurant in mainstream

American they are not. And if you think that what transpired in that restaurant was okay

to let go - Then Shame on You as well.

If so, you are equally as cowardly and complacent in allowing bigotry, hatred and

homophobia to flourish.

Maybe you are right. That is why posted my experience to hear what other people might say. It is sad that "You are a insecure gutless Schmuck" is much better than what I have heard for being gay. I understand your point though.

A tepanyaki chef's job is to entertain with their knives and cooking skills - not to do a stand up, Don Rickles style schtick. This guy was a homophobe pure and simple and I would not have stood for it. I would have told the guy to shut the fuck up and then notified management that the guy wasn't fit to wipe my ass much less cook food for my consumption. Let's not forget that the gay population continues to have disposable income in greater amounts than our heterosexual counterparts. Let's use this financial power to our benefit by ridding the restaurant world of homophobic fucks like this one.

Why not? Had it happen to a friend of mine. Was rude to a customer and got let go. People (especially at work!) think they can get away with degrading people, and in the workplace there's no easier way to handle it. He dont know you, or you him...There are men out there that deserve a good telling off where its due.

In situations like that I think of the reverse. What if I had said something like that? Shit they'd want to fire me too! So it makes sense

WWB- I don't condone what this cook did as mentioned in a previous post but I don't blame G either. We are not all cut out to be class clown or public demonstrators or whatever. We all do have a vote whether it be with a quiet talk with the owner/manager or our dollars or at the ballot box.

TBchi- As you can see from my other posts on this thread, I agree with your sentiments, just not your approach. But, everyone has to decide for themselves how they will act.

KMEM
