Despite the bad flu prevalent in Argentina, I can safely and happily report that it did not move north to interfere with my trip to Brazil. Upon arriving in Sao Paolo, we were given a flu information brochure as well as a questionnaire to answer. The latter was simply dropped in a cardboard box with no one to verify if you had identified yourself correctly of answered the questions.

When leaving Sao Paolo to fly to Rio, I noted that some 10% of airport patrons wore masks, as did some 30-40% of airport personnel at the customs and immigration desks. In the city itself, I saw only one woman wearing a mask at a shopping center.

In Rio you would never have known that there might be a problem, no masks, no signs, nothing. The crowded subway cars were apparently flu free. Now, safely at home, so am I.

Glad you had a safe trip and presumably one that was fun. Just as a matter of info, masks basically protect others rather than the wearer or so says a friend of mine who is a bona fide expert.

One of things I had told myself pre-trip was that I was perfectly safe from the swine flu if I just stayed home. Then, tonight, I read this at towleroad.com:

"In a truly sad note this morning, Doug Murphy, co-owner of [san Francisco bars] Moby Dick and, most recently, Blackbird, died Friday due to complications from the H1N1 virus, better known as swine flu. He was 41 years old, and was in Palm Springs at the time of his infection, and he had not been traveling abroad, according to business partner Shawn Vergara."

Of course, I live near Palm Springs.

How nice for you Palm Springians that he should bring such a gift to your environs. If he were still alive I would suggest that you would just as soon not be honored in this way again.

This man was sick, with an undiagnosed illness...went to his HOME to recover and ended up dying there.. and you give him shit about it? What should he have done, stayed in SF and 'honor' that city with H1N1?

You are unreal.

One can argue that getting on a plane when you are ill is not advisable, especially when you threaten the health of your fellow passengers and their families. It's not known that his travel affected anybody else. If he had flown to China, everybody who flew with him would now be quarantined.

I had no intention of making any comments about the unfortunate person involved. Except for the illness and untimely demise, the whole thing was intended to be humorous.

First I don't think there is any such thing as a Palm Springian. Secondly, I was trying for a remark similar to one Mark Twain made when his death was wrongly reported in the obituary column where he said, more or less, if it weren't for the honor of being in the newspaper I would just as soon forego the whole thing.

I am sure the whole post loses a lot if it has to be explained but you seemed upset so I thought I would try to explain it.

He and Cher had some wild times but I am sorry to learn of your report. If this should change, please be sure and inform me. :)
