I may visit San Diego in early April. Where does a working boy want to stay? I'll have a car if that matters.

I may also head over to Palm Springs for a bit; same question.

Thanks!

Hillcrest is the gay area, not aware of a lot of hotels in that immediate area, but what they call hotel circle is very close as you have a car. Practically all the major chains will have at least one property in that area, and it is usually lower cost than the other major hotel areas. Downtown/Gaslight has major hotels, convenient to convention center Petco Park and nice restaurants conveniently close. Coronado is the beach and probably not a good idea, since you are pretty far away from most. Hotels sprinkled elsewhere too. I do remember at least one hotel in Hillcrest;didn't stay there but walked past, can't remember the name and its been about a year since I visited last

Kevin, in San Diego I've stayed at the Omni hotel in the historical Gaslamp Quarter, close to the Convention Center. I liked the location as it was very central. The other time I stayed at the Sheraton hotel & Marina (closer to the airport).

Are you heading to Palm Springs for pleasure, business or combination of both? This may influence your choice. I have stayed at the Whyndam hotel during a major event over Easter and once at a gay guesthouse called "Inn Exile" in Warm Sands.

Cheers,

Good question

A little from column A, a little from column B. :)

Solamar

For San Diego, I like the Hotel Solamar (Kimpton Hotels) in the Gas Lamp district.

San Diego Hotel Options

In addition to Steven's and PWIT's recommendations, I offer the following:

- Courtyard by Marriott on Broadway downtown: Marriott repurposed an old bank building and kept many of the architectural details.

- The US Grant: A stately old hotel that a Native American tribe rehabbed. My guess is that it is furnished in a traditional style.

- The Sheraton Suites on 7th at the Symphony Building: Stay away. They claim it was recently rehabbed. If so, they should get a refund on whatever they paid because it was not well done.

- Sommerset Suites and the Hillcrest Inn: I've heard mixed reviews from out-of-town friends who have stayed at these places. They are both right in Hillcrest, but not particularly well-kept, from what I have heard.

- Park Manor Hotel on Spruce Street: This place is old and has character. If you are looking for hip and modern and trendy, this ain't the place for you. On Fridays they host the big gay cocktail party called Top of the Park. It gets really crowded and the lone elevator is overtaxed.

- Hotel Circle Area: (A/K/A Mission valley) Very convenient to Hillcrest and Downtown and all the freeways. The Marriott on Rio San Diego Drive and Qualcomm Way is OK for a big hotel, and the Courtyard by Marriott is a new gut rehab. There is also a Best Western, Days Inn, etc. A guy I hire stays at the Mission Valley Resort. The word "resort" is used very loosely here. It is decent, but nothing special. The good news about this area is that there is plenty of parking, which is cool if you do an incall. EVERYONE drives here.

I live in San Diego, so if you have your eye on a specific hotel send me a private message and I will be happy to provide any insight I might have.

Ho-tels (Insert Smiley)

We're boycotting the Manchester Hyatt, a very nice hotel, but the owner gave $100k to yes on 8. I like the Omni as well, but the Hard Rock across the street seemed to be where the cute guys were.

In Palm Springs, I couldn't tell you about anyplace except the boring Hyatt Suites. Try the gay guest houses, or look up a friendly local.

I stayed at La Dolce Vita in PS a few years back. Found it to be very clean, nice guests and nice owners. I did not have a car but it wasn't too far from dt PS at all in fact it was a very nice walk and what seemed a nice neighborhood. I did not entertain there so I can't speak of their guest policy.

Palm Springs..

Hey Kevin;

Check out Helios Resort in Palm Springs...(http://www.yourgayresort.com)...I am frequently in Palm Springs & used to stay in the Warm Sands area until I found this place...The owners are VERY escort friendly & the property boasts a playroom, multiple slings & a VERY cool vibe!

Tell them Ace sent you!!! (I'll actually be staying there White Party Weekend...hopefully we'll be there at the same time!)..

All the best;

Ace
