I was at the world famous Gaiety this past Friday night (3/28/03) and was not very impressed with any of it. I overheard someone complain about the entry fee always going up, then I walk into the place and it looks like a bad flash back, I think that the chairs and silver glitter strings have to be retired!!

I did enjoy the guys, to a certain extent. I know I was the youngest guy there, and I was sitting front and center, but the strippers are there to dance for everyone, I found that they would "linger" in front of me and either give me the "evil eye" or "oogle". Very unprofessional to say the least!!

If I do end up going there again it will be to witness the amazing physical feats that I saw there. (one guy performed a move I have only seen in movies)

With that I pose my question, "whatever made the gaiety so famous?" and "has it turned into something that it was not at one point?"

Simply put, it's the ONLY place left in NYC where you can see the hottest looking men completely nude on stage, and if you are so moved, hire them for a private show.... Sorry you didn't enjoy yourself, but you are definitely in the minority on this one. As for the cost of admission (it's been the same for a few years) $15 on weekdays and $17 on weekends is quite a bargain, esp. when you can stay all day. Try going to a movie in NYC and see what they charge.

I was going on the price based on what I overheard one of the patrons saying. You not correct, I did enjoy myself to a degree, I guess I expected something a little more "polished".

Sebastian, "Polished"? we're dealing with hustlers here, not dancers trained by Twyla Tharp. BTW, didn't Shane Rollins put on an excellent and professional show? Another dancer, GQ, this was his first time at the Gaiety. I found his routine very entertaining... If you would like company the next time you go, let me know. I give a great running commentary on eaçh "polished" dancer! :-)

Hi Sebastian,

I think you are right about you being the youngest patron at that particular show on Friday. I remember seeing you right on the front row and you seemed like you were enjoying the show.

About your question, I don't really know the answer. Hopefully one of the "old time" regulars would be able to answer it.

About the admission, I agree with Cooper, $17 on weekends it's a bargain. Specially if you want to stay the whole afternoon there and watch show after show and the same movie during breaks.

I do think the Gaiety needs some changes. For example, I would install a snack vending machine and would include bottled water in the existing refreshments machine. I would also change the free snacks on weekends just to name a few.

For now, we must enjoy this place while we have it. At the end, it's a great place to see great looking guys dancing and getting naked. :9

See you around,

Luso :)

RE: The best deal is...

Perhaps Sebastian meant he was hoping one of the POLISH dancers would be there :)

I felt the show this week was a decent one, not exceptional, but certainly decent. I felt that Shane and GQ put on great shows and that others were somewhat entertaining on stage.

Of course, there are some who just have great bodies and don't have great stage presence.

Overall, I think The Gaiety is a great value for the money. I believe the price went up from 15 to 17 on weekends about a year or two ago, but compared to a movie, I think it's a lot more enjoyable and probably a cheaper evening out when you throw in the popcorn and soda. Agree, the seats are not as comfy, but that's not really why I go there.

By the way..one thing I didn't mention earlier. It was great to see some of the patrons sitting in the second row (the long row) tipping the dancers on Saturday night. These kids work hard and showing our appreciation for them is a nice gesture.

RE: Avatar images

I have an avatar, so I bravely post that I think Luso's idea about the lounge is a great. Sebastian, I don't know you or your tastes. I fully enjoyed my time at the G when I visited NYC. Of course I was with Cooper, Lucky, Luso, NYO, Foxy, was shadowed by DickNY and met hiJinx. so maybe it was the company. The guys that week were all pretty much very energetic and a couple of them rang my bell big time. Then there were the dancers.

Guys,

I can agree with Sebastian in one respect- I do enjoy the beauty of the guys on stage but I also prefer more professional polish and the dancer trying to be creative or a showman on stage. I know they are hustlers but there have been times when I watch the Gaiety show all afternoon and evening and you really get to appreciate the dancers who put more effort into their dances, costumes or routine.

I love watching the dancers and yes, it is a good bargain compared to Broadway shows- which I love to see while in NYC.

I'm looking forward to coming to (or is it coming in) NYC this next weekend. I was there the weekend of Jackhammer's "tour'd force" but was only at the Gaiety that Saturday afternoon. I hope to meet Cooper and NYO this weekend. I have enjoyed ya'lls reviews during the last five months since I found out about this website and would like to meet you. Keep up the reviews- it is much appreciated by those of us not fortunate enough to live in NYC- for me I'm a NYC want a be!

RE: Avatar images

Hmmmmm, now that I think about it... I was at the Gaiety last Wednesday (7 dancers... best were Shane and GQ). I was there for the 6 or 7pm show (don't remember the time).

I noticed a few guys tipping who I thought looked like "regulars". Could I have witnessed any of the infamous Gaiety reviewers here? Inquiring minds want to know. Then there was the one guy who didn't tip, but kept yelling "Bravo"... "You're so sexy". I was amused. Or the woman that tipped GQ $40 and he barely looked at her and kept his eyes focused on the men who tipped $1 or $2. What a good boy!!

Sebastian, I am not sure what point you are trying to make here? What does your age have to with it? How was their behavior unprofessional?

I think Sebastian's implication about age has to do with the fact that many strippers pay attention to older men that could be potential clients. I know I've had this problem at Stock and Campus in Montreal. Most of the strippers have told my buds and me upfront that they figured we were just there to watch the show. They figure the younger and cuter you are, the less likely you're out to hire a private. Yeah, it's sexism... it's ageism... it's the truth though.

Let's face facts, if you were a go-go boy, would you spend that much time on a young stud in the audience... or a guy waving a $20 and lingering in the lounge later?

>Ok ok, I think I'm readyx(. Who would like to hold my hand

>and pull me into the Gaiety on my next visit to NYC. Only then

>will I get the balls to go in:+

Loves Yng... Once you know the dates of your next NYC adventure let me know. I've extended my hand to many Gaiety newbies and all survived, in fact, most left with a dancer.

I remember, I remember.

When you got a lot of change from a tenspot.

When all the action took place on premises.

When the blue room was off the dressing room.

When they had competition aroung the corner

They still give away free bottles of water because they do not have a fountain.

And you still get buttonholed in the lobby.

And the take-out is now expensive.

I have yet to go to the Gaiety or to Stellas. Both places will probably be on my "must list" when I go to NYC in June or early July.

I, too, hope that I am introduced to one or the other places by one or more men who respond here. The company of someone who is in the know is always a welcomed enhancement to anyone's visit to a new place.

Before I sign off-- I must state that the entrance fee is quite reasonable as contrasted to the Nob Hill Theatre in San Francisco; I think the fee is twenty+, and the dancers who perform there now do absolutely NOTHING for me. They have practically phased out the top named porn stars...

You're right Luso, I did have a good time there. I always try to make everything I do fun. There was one dancer in particular that I believe I had met in passing in Philly, I believe his name was John. He did flirt with me, but I took it more as a "two guys who know one another just being silly" sort of thing.

I read a post that started "you know how when you see a photo of a radio personality it almost always never looks like what you had imagined them to be?"

That is what I encountered, I had read a numerous amount of posts on here about how the gaiety was a really nice place with awesome dancers. I agree with the dancers being really hot, the problem was that I expected the physical aspects of the venue to be tottaly different. Perhaps more like the Townhouse uptown, a little more "polished" instead of what seemed like a flashback to the late 70's. (no offense intended)

I would accept the company of any avid "regular" of the theater. After all it's more fun when you get the scoop from someone who knows the inner workings of a spot. I never implied that I would never step foot in it again, I simply expected more than what was there.
