I was in SLC 15 years ago and was astonished at how openly gay-friendly it seemed to be. Not at all the bastion of Mormon prudery I was expecting. Don't know whether it's changed since then, but the Olympics must have done something to make it more cosmopolitan?

I live near Salt Lake City but, unfortunately, don't do much cruising and my bar days are over. But here's what I know about the area.

There are several gay bars (most are "private clubs" to conform to Utah's booze laws). They have visitor memberships for a nominal fee.

The Pillar is the gay newspaper. Unfortunately, it has changed its on-line URL and I can't find a link that works. However, here is a link that has some resource info. Bar/Club info is under "Club" in the index.

There are probably 5-6 gay bars in SLC and most are very popular and are in safe neighborhoods. Radio City Lounge claims to be the oldest gay bar west of the Mississippi. I honestly believe they haven't cleaned it since it opened and I'm sure some of the original patrons are still sitting on the same bar stools.

Not far from downtown is a park called Memory Grove. That has been a cruise area for many years. In 1999, when a tornado hit, many of the trees and bushes were destroyed. The city took this opportunity to try and clean up the area and discourage activity in the bushes. Be careful in this area. You might encounter police or bashers.

On Main Street and about 400 South there is pedestran walk way known as Exchange Place. This has been a pickup location for several years. About one year ago, one of our state legislators was arrested when he tried to pick up an uncover cop. You probably won't find bashers in this area but be careful about police.

There is a gay bathhouse/gym that's been around for years. Here's the info:

14th Street Gym

(801) 363-2023

1414 W. 200 S. SLC, UT • Steam Room • Giant Hot Tub • 7 Nautilus Machines • Free Weights • 2 TV Lounges

Haven't been there since about 1978 or 1979 so I can't give you any up-to-date info.

I've been very impressed with the quality of male escorts in SLC. Jon is my favorite and I've written a review of him on this site. Will be seeing him in the next few days and always have a good time with him. }(

Not sure if his contact info is accurate on this site but e-mail me if you want more info or one-on-one discussions.

FYI, Salt Lake City is laid out on a gird system and all addresses are based on their relationship to the Mormon Temple. For example, Club Axis is located at 108 South 500 West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84101. That means it is 1.8 blocks South of the Temple and 5.0 blocks West.

It's very easy to find things in SLC and I'm sure you'll have a good time.
