The street hustlers hang out in Yaletown, on the corner of Drake and Homer, and along Homer up to Davie Street. Lots of drug use, but there can be some pearls. (I can almost see them from my office window).

One step up is the Dufferin Hotel on the corner of Seymour and Smithe streets. If you having taken "Approaching a hustler 101" you will have no trouble. Try the downstairs bar.

There are two free newspapers, Xtra West and the Westender - both have an escort section.

Hope that gets you started.

Yes, you are right that the hustlers hang out on Homer Street, along Davie etc and sometimes you can pick up a guy at Blenz at the corner of Davie and Granville, especially at night or late at night and sometimes along Davie Street going into the gay village, those would be the panhandlers. But as far as the Dufferin hotel is concerned, which used to be a hot place to pick up hustler's, that is being discouraged in the utmost way by the new management. Now that the management is enforcing ID for entrance, which unfortunately most hustlers dont have they are not allowed to stay in the bar. The day time bar tender enforces the rule 100% and one of the new owners is always in the bar nosing around. Some of the bar tenders at night in the downstairs bar will be too busy to check, and as long as the hustlers are not to obvious, they can stay in. Some of the younger hustlers will stand outside in the back in the parking lot of the bar, but if the new owners see them, and there are 4 new owners, they will tell them to get off the property. There is still the lane where they can stand and pick a guy up as he leaves the bar. Some will stand in front, on the sidewalk in front of the bar, but again the new owners try and intemidate them to leave. Ahhh yes, the Dufferin use to be a gold mine for many good looking hustlers. Now it is nothing more than a bar with a lot of druggies and drunks and wierdos, there are a few good people that still go there but for the most part the clientle has changed. You would do better looking elsewhere.

I would agree with World Traveler. The recent change in management has really put a damper on the Dufferin, or maybe the new owners are just the last blow to a bar where customer service is not a priority or even an afterthought. Many of the usual patrons, not just hustlers, are staying away. Fridays and Saturdays still are fairly crowded, but nothing like in past years. Weekdays are very dead.

The bartenders go out of their way to be hostile to working boys and to find ways to bar them. A few of the boys are barely tolerated. For that matter, the bartenders seem to be hostile to just about everyone.

So check around the Dufferin, but your best bet is the stroll on Homer, from Drake to Davie, but keep an eye open for boys as far north as Smythe. Most of the boys are the seriously drug addicted. Granville and Davie are full of panhandlers, but none of them are obviously hustling. The days of hustlers in Vancouver are almost over, just like Portland and Seattle. Save your money and time and go to Montreal, the last great hustler city in North America.

I am on my way to Vancouver this Saturday May 17th and decided to stay at the Dufferin Hotel. It does not sound like a friendly place. My question is, can I take a friend to my room without a problem from the hotel staff. We will have a car so crusing the street hustlers is not a problem. Are there any other "hustler" friendly bars and or strip clubs. I will only be in Vancouver for three days, so want to make the most of my time.

Have no fear - the Dufferin is a fine place to stay - and NO trouble getting someone to your room. The staff is very used to that. I have never had a problem with the hotel or bar staff.

The Dufferin is an "ok" place to stay since it is the only "gay" hotel in town. The rates are a bit high for what the Dufferin is.As far as the Hotel staff is concerened, I have seen at on many ocassions, guys stopped from going up to rooms by the hotel staff. Sometimes the hotel staff will not even call up to a room to see if it is OK to let the guy go up. Taking the guy up with you is the best way to insure he gets there. I know of two guests personally that have been told to take the business elsewhere.

Smiles by any of the employees is hard to come by at the Duf.
