Different fake names for gay or straight audiences?

Why do some gay porn stars have different fake names depending on whether their audience is straight or gay? Matthew Rush goes as Greg Grove in the muscle magazines (whose audience, although ostensibly straight, is mostly gay anyways), and Brett Mycles goes as Robert Sager when he poses in muscle mags. Now, the wierd thing is, I just got my January 2002 Playgirl, and they're announcing that Brett/Robert is going to pose in February's issue as Robert. They are both so incredibly recognizable. Why bother having two fake names? Especially in Robert/Brett's case, since he's going to be nude again in Playgirl.

Actually, I recently hired an escort who uses his real name as an escort and in the magazines (I know he wasn't lying because he had some letters out). He hasn't had any problems. Has anybody ever heard any bad stories because someone used his real name?

Unicorn,

For many escorts, it depends too on what they do in "real life". I know a few who have regular, respectable jobs, and a totally different identity. For others, this different identity helps them somehow play the role of the escort well, while not letting it confuse their real life (a difficult act to accomplish anyway).

In reading your question, I racked my brain to find any escorts who use their entire real name (from the ones I know) and came up with ... zero (unless you count the guy whose first name is the same or close... but either has no family name, or it is totally different).

Personally, I feel this is none of my business, just as I am hesitent to tell an escort my full name and my business etc... unless absolutely necessary (the name... never the business). We all deserve some privacy.

Isn't it also true that some clients also change their names for the very same need for privacy. I have several friends who use escorts and never use their real names.

I do know exactly one escort who uses his real name. He goes out of his way to make sure his last name isn't listed anywhere because his uncle (same last name) is a well-known local politician. LOL

As far as Playgirl and the muscle mags go, they generally try to stay at arm's length from their gay audience. They know it's there, sure, and they appreciate the $ it brings in but they don't want to get "too" close to it.

Names with pictorials are rarely chosen by the model unles the model has an established name. I was *amazed* that Playgirl used Talvin DeMachio's porn name. That's a first, I think. (And the caption "Tall, dark and handsome" gives you a hint about the accuracy of the words they run.) They usually invent a new name for the gay porn stars to "keep the distance".

Thanks for the insight deej, I was sure porn stars' multiple names are insulation of some sort, but couldn't quite put my finger on the reason either. As long as we're talking about names, I have a semi-tangential question: Is it necessary for an escort to give a client a real name and address in order to receive a ticket for travel? It seems to defeat the purpose in acquiring a stage name in the first place, doesn't it?

Actually, airlines require a real name on the ticket. It's been that way for at least 10 years. I used to deal with it sending instructors around the country to teach courses. Switching instructors meant cancelling a ticket to get one in the right name.

With escorts, I think the best suggestion I've seen is having the escort book a flight with his preferred travel agent, and then giving you the travel agent's phone number so you can use your credit card to pay for the flight he booked. The escort never gets your credit card number, and his privacy is protected.

That's one way to handle it, anyway.

I'm sorry, but if an escort doesn't trust me with his real name, I'm not going to shell out the $$ for the airline ticket, let alone the major $$ for an extended hire. I've bought airline tickets for several escorts, and none of them objected to giving me his real name once we agreed on the details. I usually book through either the specific airline's web site or through a trave website (once through my travel agency, which doesn't charge me). Of course, most of the escorts whom I've hired for a trip, I had hired them beforehand. But on two occasions I just relied on their reviews here. If they live in a different city, what could they possibly be afraid of? That I would move to their city just so I could stalk them? Besides, I would feel like a complete idiot spending the week-end (or longer) with someone and calling him by a fake name. I mean, it's one thing to shout out "Oh, Fred, you're so good!" when his name's Kevin (for an hour), but another to continue having conversations with someone whose name you don't know.

Maybe the younger crowd that I hire is just more trusting... but about half of the escorts that I hire use their real first name, or something very close. They keep their last names to themselves when they advertise, but all have shared it with me if we send mail to each other, or certainly if they have to travel to meet me. I always warn them to be a little careful about personal info, for a multitude of reasons... the most obvious of which is crazy people, but also that someday later in life, when they are in some mainstream career, it could come back to bite them in the ass. And obviously I am very careful about their personal information, but I do find it much more intimate to share time with an escort whose real name you know.

My favorite example of this is straight porn star Peter North. Before getting into straight porn, he had a career as a gay porn BOTTOM named Matt Ramsey. Most of his work has been as Peter North. When he was asked about Matt Ramsey, at first he denied ever being Ramsey. Later he would admit to being Ramsey, but tried to say he was strictly trade top. Anyone who ahs seen his scene with Rick "Humoungous" Donovan knows better than that :)

Yes, and when his bottom scenes were pointed out, he claimed they were either stunted or done through electronic editing.

Honey, in those days electronic editing tools weren't good enough. And there ain't no stunting good enough for that scene with Rick Donovan.

I've heard he'll actually get violent if you bring up the subject of "Matt Ramsey" with him. He REALLY wants to preserve the separation between his gay career and his str8 career because of the stygma in str8 porn about men who have done gay porn.
